 | | | A Crutch
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5
I was introduced to a man who became very hostile when he found out that I was a minister. I do not know what happened in his past, but he was very aggressive in his desire to make it clear he did not believe in Christianity or any religion. He said, “I don’t need a crutch to lean on. You might. Religion is just a crutch for people who cannot stand on their own.” I remember being in shock at his sudden, unanticipated outburst. I do not think I said anything in rebuttal.
After a period of time many responses came to my mind. Since that experience I have thought long and hard about what he said. I have come to understand that there are times when a crutch is not only important, but essential. I broke my ankle and without the crutch I would not have been able to move from place to place. We had a lady in our church that has spent most of her life leaning on some type of crutch because of an injury to her legs. Crutches are good, especially when they are strong and reliable. Without crutches many would find their lives much more restricted.
Most of us want to believe we can stand on our own two feet. We do not like leaning on someone or something for support. The truth is we are always leaning on others for knowledge, information, or wisdom. We do not have all the answers, so we trust teachers, weathermen, newscasters, physicians, mechanics, and counselors to help us with our needs. The list of people we lean on is almost endless. The reality is that our lives are lives of trust. We must believe somebody. We must trust something. In many cases that is ourselves, but we do trust in something or someone. Most of us realize we cannot trust ourselves or our understandings because they are so limited.
May we lean on the One that does have all wisdom. I hope I will always lean on him who has all understanding. Without embarrassment, I say, “Jesus is my crutch.”
