Cheers!

The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, Hosanna to the Son of David!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!  Hosanna in the highest!  Matthew 21:9

Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!  Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!  Luke 19:38

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, Hosanna!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!  Blessed is the King of Israel!  John 12:13

When I read the cheers that were given to Jesus on the day we call Palm Sunday, it makes me think that many of the cheers used at sporting events are pretty paltry and vile.  We do cheer with zeal and enthusiasm, but recently some cheers directed at the opposition are pretty crude.  Spelling your home team's name at full volume can be pretty exhilarating.  Unfortunately, it doesn't always lead to victory.

The cheers for Jesus are the highest type.  "Hosanna" means save now.  A cheer like this indicates that the crowd believes Jesus has great power.  "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord," is an acknowledgement of the blessing Jesus brought to others and the way he conducted  himself.  "Hosanna in the highest," would mean that salvation comes from God above.  They saw Jesus as a deliverer sent by God.  "Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David," speaks of some of the people seeing Jesus as God's promised Messiah.  Jesus would restore the coming of David.  "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord," and "Blessed is the king of Israel," tell us what the crowd hoped Jesus would soon become.  "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest," point to God's reign on earth.

The problem with cheers is that they stop when the fans don't get what they want.
