 | | | Don't Do As They Do
You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Leviticus 18:3
Growing up I heard repeatedly, “Do what I say, not what I do!” I also heard, “Don’t do what they do!” That comment was directed toward the behavior of my friends. I wonder if my parents knew that the thought they were commanding was originally in the Bible?
Some of us have a tendency to pick friends that lead us in undesirable ways. God wants a holy nation that worships him. He says, “You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees.” The practices of the Egyptians were idolatrous, and the Canaanites worshiped false gods which caused them to be vomited out of the land! The picture given in the Scripture is that their practices were so ungodly that they literally made the land sick.
God knows how easily we can be led astray, and so he states clearly that there must be a distinction in the way his people live. What did the Egyptians do that was so bad? At the top of the list is the fact they worshipped numerous false gods. Also, incest was a common practice. This is why the long list of prohibitions in this chapter is given. The Canaanites also had numerous false gods and practiced abhorrent sexual behavior. The Canaanite god Molech was worshipped with human sacrifices. Sexual practices among the Canaanites were not limited to God’s ideal—a heterosexual relationship, which was to be monogamous and permanent. Even though neither the Egyptians nor the Canaanites had God’s standard spelled out for them, there seems to be a basic universal rightness which they should have known and followed.
So often our excuse for unacceptable behavior is, “Everybody else is doing it.” God’s response remains the same today as during the time of Moses, “That does not make it right. You must not do as they do.”
