 | | | Loneliness
Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and all whose mouths have not kissed him." 1 Kings 19:18
Alone, Elijah found himself running from Jezebel. Many of the past years Elijah had been alone: at Kerith Ravine, Zarephath, Horeb, and on his return to Israel. Loneliness affects us emotionally and spiritually. Elijah felt he was the only person following the Lord God. Even though Obadiah had risked his life to hide and feed one hundred of the Lord’s prophets, Elijah felt alone. Loneliness had caused him to miss the truth.
Alone at Horeb, the Mountain of God, God asks Elijah what he is doing there. His response was, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too." (1 Kings 19:10)
God then reveals himself to Elijah in a still small voice, a gentle whisper. He wanted Elijah to understand that he was never alone. God was always with him. In verse 13, God asks again, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Sadly, Elijah responded just as he did before. He missed the point of why God called him there: to reveal himself to Elijah. God then sends him off on a divine task and a glimpse of the future. There would be a prophet to follow in his footsteps—Elisha, son of Shaphat.
Do you feel at times that you are alone walking the road of faith? Have you, like Elijah, been under a great deal of pressure? A woman recently asked, “Why is the noise around me so much louder than the whisper of God?” Elijah at Mt. Horeb experienced a wind that could break rocks, an earthquake, and a fire. God was not in them. He was in the gentle whisper.
You are not alone. There are seven thousand who have not bowed their knees to the idols of this world. Listen for his whisper.
