Comfort in Suffering
Scripture Reading — Psalm 119:49-56
My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. — Psalm 119:50
As we noted earlier, we don’t know who wrote Psalm 119. Some people have suggested that maybe the prophet Daniel wrote it. If he did, the words in this section could echo his own life experience.
Filled with hatred, Daniel’s rivals mocked and scorned him. Daniel was a highly effective leader, and King Darius of Babylon put him in charge of one-third of the kingdom. But Daniel’s enemies hated him so much that they tricked the king into making a new law: whoever prayed to any god or person besides Darius the king would be thrown into the lions’ den. They did this because they knew Daniel prayed only to God and would never pray to Darius. Soon Daniel was seen praying to God, and he was thrown into the lions’ den at sundown the same day. All through that night, however, God protected Daniel, and his life was spared. (See Daniel 6.)
These words of Psalm 119 provide an inspiring example. The psalmist’s suffering drives him deeper into God’s Word, and he meditates on it even as he waits sleeplessly through the night, finding comfort in God’s promises.
No one likes to suffer, but we can take courage that suffering can actually move us closer to God. As we meditate on God’s Word, we experience ever more deeply his love and the comfort of his promise to preserve us.
Prayer: Help us to remember your promises, Lord, and to find comfort in them. Amen.

That started what would become DC Retro Jumpers. We're a team of adult jumpers who do exhibitions and give lessons all over the metropolitan area — and now the world. (Keep reading)

Scripture Reading: Colossians 2: 8-12
When I was a little girl, I loved playing with dolls. My dolls did not share my skin tone or hair texture. Recognizing this, my dad encouraged my mom to give me dolls with hair that felt like, and skin tone that mirrored, mine. When I grew older, I learned about “The Doll Test.” Psychologists had used brown-skinned dolls and white-skinned dolls to determine the effect racial segregation had on children. The dark-skinned children gravitated to the white doll, though the brown-skinned dolls were otherwise identical. Psychologists concluded, racial segregation caused Black children to feel inferior, even though they were not. By dismantling black-white segregation in schools, the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board Supreme Court decision continues to influence against racism in America and beyond.
The Bible makes it clear that no “race” is inferior, despite lies and systems that promote such. God tells us He made all nations from one human (Acts 17:26), and all nations—as one people—will praise the Father at Christ’s return (Revelation 7:9–10).
The old childhood song “Jesus Loves the Little Children,” conveys those biblical truths. All children are precious in His sight, as He created humankind in His divine image. Through Him we are freed of negative perceptions perpetuated by systems that separate rather than unite. His truth affirms He is the maker of us all” (Isaiah 64:8).
While uplifting our uniqueness, let’s dismantle divisive, hurtful lies.

Thought of the Day
"First Chronicles 3:4-6 says, "David reigned in Jerusalem thirty-three years, and these were the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon. These four were by Bathsheba daughter of Ammiel."
When I spotted the name of Nathan, it struck me: David and Bathsheba named their second born after the very prophet who nailed David for his sin of adultery and murder. To me, it spoke volumes about the depth of David's repentance and humility. Little wonder he was known as a man after God's hear t…"

You are responsible
Yes, you are responsible. Yes, your most powerful, effective choice is to embrace that responsibility.
Avoiding the difficult issues will only make the situation worse. Seeing yourself as a victim will only separate you from your best options.
It’s your life, it’s your future. Take full ownership of your circumstances, of your consequences.
Actively participate as each new moment unfolds, with purpose, integrity, care, and love. Give expression to your values, give life to your dreams, by giving your best, again and again.
Recognize the immense value of opportunity that’s always available to you. Continue to discover the beneficial results of empowering your thoughts, your attitude, and your actions with responsibility.
Yes, responsibility is a serious challenge, one that will impart focus, strength, wisdom, skill, achievement, and an abiding sense of purpose. Yes, you are responsible, and that’s a very good thing.

PLANTING SEEDS
Luke 8:15 But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance. (NASB)
Thoughts
Last year, I started leasing a new piece of property to hunt. My son and I spent hours upon hours out at the property trying to get it ready for the upcoming deer season. Part of the property had been clear-cut years before, so it was really thick. We had to:
Cut lanes to get in and out of various areas of the property.
Build a ground blind in one particular spot.
Hang tree stands in several locations for bow season.
Place our trail cams out to figure out travel patterns for the deer.
Place an old camper up at one spot on the property for us to be able to stay at, rather than running back and forth from home.
The neighbors were also clear cutting a section of woods. There was a lot of activity for one summer - probably too much for the property, actually.
Now that most of the work is already in place, we're looking forward to planting our food plots this year. Last year was a big learning year for us in just getting acclimated with the property, but we're hoping that the food plots that we plant this year will help.
We've been researching what plants grow best in certain soil conditions. It's all about the seeds that we plant as to how things turn out for us this upcoming fall.
(Dave M)
Action Point
Throughout our Christian lives, we should constantly be looking to plant seeds. Sometimes, you and I might get the opportunity to lead someone to Christ, but more times than not, your life and mine is simply spent scattering seeds of faith. As we live out our work days, as we travel to various places, and as we support our kids' programs/teams, we have the opportunity to rub shoulders with a lot of folks who need Jesus as Savior.
Be conscious of the great responsibility to plant seeds in other people's lives about Christ. We are to be His ambassadors to the world, and it happens one little seed at a time ... maybe an encouraging word, maybe offering to pray for someone, maybe sharing a verse that means a lot to you, or maybe taking the time to listen to someone's problem. Whatever the situation, share your faith as God allows.
Sportsmen's Tip of the Day
Whitetails can be pretty lazy. If you want to redirect their path, place a downed tree in their way to funnel them in a different direction. Often, if you cut a path in a thicket, the deer will follow the path of least resistance.

TRAVELING ON MY KNEES
Last night I took a journey
To a land across the seas.
I didn't go by ship or plane
I traveled on my knees.
I saw so many people there
In bondage to their sin,
And Jesus told me I should go,
That there were souls to win.
But I said "Jesus, I can't go
To lands across the seas."
He answered quickly, "Yes, you can
By traveling on your knees."
He said, "You pray, I'll meet the need.
You call, and I will hear.
It's up to you to be concerned
For lost souls far and near."
And so I did; knelt in prayer,
Gave up some hours of ease,
And with the Savior by my side,
I traveled on my knees.
As I prayed on, I saw souls saved
And twisted persons healed,
I saw God's workers strength renewed
While laboring in the field.
I said, "Yes Lord, I'll take the job.
Your heart I want to please.
I'll heed Your call and swiftly go
By traveling on my knees."

Oh God, call our weary souls from their hiding places. Let us find hope in your word and rest in your presence. May your love abound. Amen.
For Epiphany
Father, we thank you for revealing yourself to us in Jesus the Christ, we who once were not your people but whom you chose to adopt as your people. As ancient Israel confessed long ago, we realize that it was not because of our own righteousness, or our own superior wisdom, or strength, or power, or numbers. It was simply because you loved us, and chose to show us that love in Jesus.
As you have accepted us when we did not deserve your love, will you help us to accept those whom we find it hard to love? Forgive us, O Lord, for any attitude that we harbor that on any level sees ourselves as better or more righteous than others. Will you help us to remove the barriers of prejudice and to tear down the walls of bigotry, religious or social? O Lord, help us realize that the walls that we erect for others only form our own prisons!
Will you fill us so full of your love that there is no more room for intolerance and hate? As you have forgiven us much, will you enable us with your strength to forgive others even more? Will you enable us through your abiding Presence among us, communally and individually, to live our lives in a manner worthy of the Name we bear?
May we, through your guidance and our faithful obedience, find new avenues in ways that we have not imagined of holding the Light of your love so that it may be a Light of revelation for all people. O Father, would you through your strength help us not to lose the wonder of this season? Help us live expectantly in the world as your people, so that everything we do may be done in your name.
Lord, we again confess that you are our God and that we are your people. We thank you for your love, praise you for your Gift that we have so recently celebrated, ask for your continued Presence with us, and bring these petitions in the name of your Son, who has truly revealed your heart. Amen -- Dennis Bratcher
Lavish Light
Read: Proverbs 29:6-14
The poor man and the oppressor meet together; the LORD gives light to the eyes of both. (v. 13)
Throughout the story of God, I see the undeniable evidence that God is not stingy. Perhaps circumstances and the liar have attempted to teach us differently, but there it is, again and again. Beginning with the bountiful Genesis garden, humans enjoyed endless variety and beauty (Genesis 2:9). God fed his children daily in the wilderness with more than they could eat and would not allow them to save leftovers (Exodus 16).
Jesus described his Abba as a generous sower, who casts seed broadly—not just on fertile soil, but on rocky places, worn down paths, and weedy byways (Luke 8:4-15). And he teaches how God loves lavishly, “He makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45). Seeds, sunlight, and showers make no exception.
Peter, that hardheaded and reckless disciple-turned-pastor preaches that God is patient, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). God is not stingy.
“But why?” our less-generous hearts want to know. Why does God bless both the humble and the oppressor, giving light to both? The clue lies in Romans 2:4, for it is the lavish kindness of God that leads to repentance.
As you pray, confess any stinginess of spirit, and ask for a heart like God’s heart.

KOREAN PANCAKE: PAJEON
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Yield: 8 servings
For the Pajun (Pajeon)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups water
1 large egg
1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt
2 cups frozen hash browns, completely thawed
1 cup shredded carrots
1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced julienne
1 small zucchini, sliced julienne
1 bunch green onions, cut in 1 in. sections
Pepper to taste
Vegetable oil for cooking
For the Dipping Sauce
1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 minced garlic clove
1 teaspoon sesame seeds
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
Place all the dipping sauce ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl. Whisk and warm in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, just long enough for the sugar to dissolve. Whisk again and set aside.
In a large bowl, beat together the flour, water, egg and salt. Mix in the thawed hash browns, then set the batter aside to rest.
Preheat two non-stick skillets to medium high heat. Slice all the veggies julienne (long thin strips) and mix into the batter. Pepper to taste. If the batter still seems very thick after the veggies are mixed in, add 2-3 tablespoons of water and mix well.
Now add a little oil to each skillet and swirl around. Ladle enough veggie batter into each skillet to completely cover the bottom. Fry for 4-5 minutes, per side.
Repeat with remaining batter. *Using two 12 inch skillets, you should have enough batter to make 4 large pancakes.
Cut the Korean pancakes into wedges and serve warm with the dipping sauce.

All-Pro Dad Play of the Day … 4 Reasons Why Men Fail Repeatedly

Word of the Day: diction
[dik-shuhn ]
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: style of speaking or writing as dependent upon choice of words.
WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF DICTION?
Diction ultimately comes from Latin dictiō (inflectional stem dictiōn-) “speaking, act of speaking, (oracular) utterance, word, expression,” a derivative of the verb dīcere “to say, speak, talk.” Dictiō, though a word in general Latin vocabulary, is naturally connected very closely with rhetoric and law, two very important professions among the Romans. Dīcere, earlier deicere, comes from the very common Proto-Indo-European root deik- (also deig-), dik- (dig-) “to show, point out,” and appears in Greek deíknysthai “to show, point out,” Gothic ga-teihan “to show, make clear,” and German zeigen “to show.” The 13th-century English philologist, grammarian, and university professor John of Garland coined the word dictiōnārius as the title for one of his Latin textbooks in which he grouped lexical items thematically. Garland explained that his dictiōnārius was not based on the sense of dictiō as a single word, but dictiō in the sense of connected discourse. In the 14th century the Benedictine monk, translator, and encyclopedist Pierre Bersuire used the term dictiōnārium as the title for an alphabetical encyclopedia of the Vulgate (St. Jerome’s version of the Latin Bible, completed at the end of the 4th century). By the 15th century, dictiōnārium acquired the generalized sense “alphabetized wordbook.” Diction entered English in the 15th century.

Helping Families Love Well … Forget New Year's Resolutions: Remember One Word
If you’re like most people, you came up with some new resolutions for yourself, your marriage, or your family. New Year's Resolutions can be hard to keep, as I’ve blogged about before. So this year, I’m endorsing a simpler idea: Remember one word. A friend of mine named Bobb Biehl inspired me to do this. Recently, I found some notes I took during one of his talks years ago. Bobb shared the importance of having a “single word focus.”
It’s a great concept. Through the years, I’ve used this single word focus at work and at home. One year, our one word was clarity: to be clearer on strategy, roles, and responsibilities at Family First. Your word might be something you want to do (verb), something you want to be (noun), or something you want to describe yourself or the world around you (adjective). Here are 10 words to choose from.

didn't support you as he should have, emotionally or financially, even when he
had the money. He didn't have to instill discipline, especially when one of the
reasons you acted out was because you felt abandoned by your father. Now you
think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. -- The Ones Left Behind
Dear Left Behind: You have a good grasp of your
children's emotional need for their biological father, even though he abandoned
them. Try to look on the bright side of this -- he may turn out to be helpful
and loving now that the kids don't require so much effort from him. Consider
this a benefit for your children. Kids can never have too many people in their
lives who love them. And also keep in mind that once the novelty wears off, the
kids will likely see Dad more clearly.
Please don't express hurt or dismay that they
long for Dad's company. Be supportive and understanding. In time, we hope they
will come to appreciate you even more than they already do.
Dear Annie: I work in a small department within
a larger corporation. One of my co-workers is a rather large gentleman who has
very bad body odor. I am a larger gal myself, and I sweat more than others. I
know this, so I bathe daily and use antiperspirant.
This co-worker comes into the office smelling
this way, so he probably doesn't shower every morning. He works with the
public, and I can't help but wonder what kind of an impression he leaves about
our department. I am not the only one who has noticed this, but I am not
comfortable enough to talk directly to this person. Should our supervisor say
something? Please help. -- Suffocating in Saskatchewan
Dear Suffocating: Some body odors are hard to
control, so it's best not to make assumptions. It's possible that this man
bathes daily and wears deodorant and it still isn't enough. It could be the
detergent he washes his clothes in, his shampoo or soap, or even an ineffective
deodorant.
Someone needs to talk to this co-worker and
suggest that he speak to his doctor. The supervisor is the best one to do this,
making it an issue of office professionalism and not personal judgment. We know
this is difficult for anyone to do, but frankly, the supervisor would be doing
him a huge favor.
