Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced professional to lead strategic analysis, market engagement, and operational planning related to Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), Distributed Energy Resource (DER) aggregation, and evolving U.S. electric power market regulations. This role will focus heavily on FERC Order 2222 implementation, RTO/ISO market structures, and aggregator operational requirements across North America.
The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in U.S. wholesale electricity markets, DER/VPP business models, and utility or energy-sector project execution. This individual will act as a bridge between regulatory strategy, technical development, operational execution, and customer engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Research, analyze, and communicate emerging trends, regulatory developments, and market requirements within the U.S. electric power industry, with a particular focus on:
- FERC Order 2222
- Virtual Power Plants (VPPs)
- Distributed Energy Resource (DER) aggregation
- Independent Power Producer (IPP) and aggregator business models
- Monitor and evaluate differences in market operations, participation models, and compliance requirements across North American RTOs/ISOs, including:
- PJM
- CAISO
- ERCOT
- MISO
- NYISO
- ISO-NE
- SPP
- Canadian market structures where applicable
- Identify operational and market participation challenges from the perspective of DER aggregators and VPP operators and translate those findings into prioritized Proof-of-Concept (PoC) and product development initiatives.
- Lead end-user engagement activities including:
- Identification of target customers and stakeholders
- Development of testing and validation plans
- Field validation and pilot coordination
- Communication strategy development
- Solution proposal and technical consultation
- Rapid operational feedback response and issue resolution
- Collaborate cross-functionally with technical, product, engineering, and business teams to review project deliverables from both operational and technical perspectives.
- Organize operational issues, assess risks, and formulate strategic policies and implementation recommendations.
- Support strategic planning for VPP commercialization, market participation, and utility/customer integration initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- In-depth understanding of:
- U.S. electric power regulations
- Wholesale electricity market operations
- DER aggregation and VPP business models
- RTO/ISO operational frameworks
- Experience in utility, energy, or power-sector project development and project management.
- Strong knowledge of market participation rules and operational practices across major U.S. RTOs/ISOs.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and consensus-building skills.
- Strong analytical and technical problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to manage complex cross-functional projects involving regulatory, technical, and operational stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience in:
- Virtual Power Plant (VPP) projects
- DER aggregation platforms
- Demand response programs
- Energy market integration initiatives
- Experience serving as a:
- Developer
- System designer
- Project manager
- Market operations lead
in VPP or related energy technology projects. - Experience participating in projects involving:
- FERC regulatory compliance
- RTO/ISO market participation
- Utility interconnection or operational coordination
- Grid modernization initiatives
- Familiarity with North American utility operations and evolving distributed energy market trends.
