This is a week of many fun films and I suggest checking out New Russian Cinema on Thursday. On a personal note, I am now a fully enrolled graduate student! Let the school begin.
Please continue to let me know whom to add onto this list. A lot of you are involved in the arts, so if you know of any events that I should be aware of, please tell me about them.
Enjoy. Naomi

Pixelville @ DUMBO Arts Center, 30 Washington Street, Brooklyn
$2; The pair collaborates à la a game of Exquisite Corpse, aware of the other's involvement but blind to specific compositional details, building their installation in much the same way as strangers living in proximity build their cities in unknowing tandem. And it is precisely this unpredictable urban jumble of flesh and concrete that the pair both celebrates and transcends in PIXELVILLE. A combination of biota-based sculptural elements by Alroy mingle with digital projections by Shor to create a microcosm of the future city — no longer a physical location, the "city" has become a state of mind, a pattern of fluctuating energy that has taken on an increasingly metaphorical existence with the advent of digital media.

People & Their Letters & the Tyranny of Email @ Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway
$20; The letter has been all but replaced by email and texting, to the point where writing seems kind of quaint, reserved only for the most formal occasions — weddings, funerals, court summonses, and the like. Tonight, Granta editor John Freeman and novelist Thomas Mallon discuss this shift and its impact on our everyday lives. According to Freeman, we now spend 41% percent of our day reading and responding to emails. To illustrate the way things used to be, Original SNL cast member Jane Curtin and Selected Shorts artistic director Isaiah Sheffer read a selection of famous letters. A Q&A follows the program and allows the audience to weigh in with opinions on the issue.
January 20th 8:00-9:00pm
The
Greenpoint Shredder @ Email for address G train to Nassau station,
Brooklyn
Free; After several months of operating in the local
community the Shredder is available to the public. It's 15 minutes of
one-on-one conversation. You show up, we sit down, you have some tea
or juice if you like (no coffee, sometimes cookies). You talk. We
listen. The topic is up to you. You can also be silent. In any event
whatever is said during the conversation goes immediately after the
15 minutes are gone to our Giant Information Shredder. It is
forgotten. We don't want to know your name, and you won't find out
our names either. We don't care about what you do for a living. We
won't ask questions. This isn't therapy, or a religious experience.
We don't analyze. We don't judge. We don't try to help either. We
maybe don't even care. But we do listen. We do it just for one hour
on Wednesday evenings, so it's just three people or so that we can
see any given week. Send email to get a slot for the coming week.
We’ll send details. greenpoin...@gmail.com
******* Thursday January 21st ******
January 21st 6:00-9:00pm
Quick While Still @ Heist Gallery pop-up space, 143 Madison avenue
Quick While Still, a ‘pop-up’ exhibition of large-scale paintings by New York based artists Katherine Bernhardt, Kadar Brock, Mark Gibson, Matt Jones, John Newsom, and Wendy White who will exhibit their works in an exciting, unfinished space. One might even say that the rawness of the space itself is a reflection of the rawness of these artist’s ambitions. Quick While Still offers a chance to see their work stripped of the glamour of the highly polished white cubes of Chelsea. www.heistgallery.com
January 21st 6:00-9:00pm
Faggot Carnival @ Ramiken Crucible, 221 East Broadway
Ramiken Crucible is pleased to present Faggot Carnival, a solo exhibition of original works in acrylic and latex on canvas by New York based queer artist Nolan Hendrickson. Hendrickson’s Faggot Carnival takes aim at contemporary culture in urban society with an unsettlingly lascivious and deadpan hilarious point of view. While straddling a host of issues, from controversial sexual vulgarity to the gay adoption of the traditionally feminized position of the ‘inferior’, Faggot Carnival creates an ultimate cohesion in Hendrickson’s use of vivid colors and highly relevant wit. In Hendrickson's rear view mirror, the future looks bright and funny. www.ramikencrucible.com
January 21st 7:00-9:00pm
The Live Show @ Cabinet, 300 Nevins Street, Brooklyn
“The Live! Show,” an exhibition by New York-based artist Jaime Davidovich, examines the history of the artist's pioneering cable TV show of the same name. Shown on Manhattan cable Channel J from 1979 to 1984, the program was equally inspired, says Davidovich, by the Dada performance club Cabaret Voltaire and the anarchic style of groundbreaking TV comedian Ernie Kovacs. Taking full advantage of the potential of early cable television for artistic experimentation, The Live! Show was designed to be what Davidovich’s calls "a television variety show of the avant-garde": hosted by his alter ego "Dr Videovich," it typically featured guest performances by other artists drawn from the vibrant New York art community of the period. In addition to episodes from the show, the exhibition will also showcase some of the objects that Davidovich, mimicking the commercial language of television, made to be sold during his show's “Video Shop" segment. www.cabinetmagazine.org

New
Russian Cinema: A Program of Short Films @ Tribeca Cinemas, 54 Varick
Street
$5 sugg. Donation; CEC ArtsLink presents the North American
premiere of four award-winning Russian short films depicting the
inner conflicts facing ordinary Russians. Yuri Bykov’s The Boss
shows a man in a position of power who takes justice into his own
hands. In Alisa Khmlenitskaya’s Boulevard, an optimistic but
naïve young girl and cynical, disillusioned middle-aged woman
transform each other’s lives through a chance conversation. Ilya
Kazankov’s Mom follows a pair of cadets who go AWOL on an endearing
mission. Ekaterina Telegina‘s The Gust of Wind is a visually
powerful and dark tale about following one’s dreams. The screening
will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers, who are in the
U.S. on a residency co-hosted by the Sundance Film Festival and CEC
ArtsLink as part of the Open World Cultural Leaders Program.

Afro
Funky! @ Cameo Gallery, 93 N. 6th St, Brooklyn
$5; Brooklyn-based
Afro-Funk juggernaut Ikebe Shakedown unleashes a fiery mix of sweaty
Afro rhythms, deep funk, and gritty disco. Featuring a hard-hitting
rhythm section and dynamic horns, Ikebe (ee-KAY-bay) Shakedown will
get you out of your seat and onto the dance floor! Zongo Junction is
Brooklyn’s hottest new Afrobeat ensemble. 13 pieces in total, it is
comprised of an eight-person rhythm section and six horns. The band
began when Drummer/leader Charles Ferguson returned from Ghana after
studying Xylophone for 6 months in the fall of 2008. He assembled a
group of some of the finest young musicians in the area. The music of
Zongo Junction is a blend between the hard hitting Funk and Afrobeat
grooves, coming out of Ghana, Nigeria and Benin in the 60’s and
70’s, and Funk music from the U.S. The People’s Champions play
music for the mind, body and soul.

Glen or Glenda & Bride of the Monster @ MoMA, 11 53rd St
Free with Museum admission; Glen or Glenda 1953. This unintentionally hilarious, quasi-autobiographical faux docudrama preached for social change and the acceptance of transvestitism. Bride of the Monster 1955. Well-known for the production crew’s unauthorized theft of a studio’s prop octopus for use as the titular monster, this entertainingly inept film features Lugosi—in a dignified performance that recalls his Dracula magnetism—as an evil scientist who plots to create superhumans using an atomic machine.
January 22nd 8:00pm
Kevin Geeks Out @ 92Y
Tribeca, 200 Hudson Street
$10; The video-variety show features
documentary clips, science films, Saturday morning cartoons and

genuine psychic!) answers audience questions about the future, Kriota
Wilberg (anatomy teacher) talks about medical advances of the future,
Seth Porges (Popular Mechanics) looks back at the predictions about
technology, Tenebrous Kate (Love Train for the Tenebrous Empire)
makes a case for the best Italian vision of the future. PLUS:
admission includes a heaping helping of DIPPIN DOTS -- the "ice
cream of the future."

High Jack: Catch 22 @ TBA
$15/$20; High....it's Jack here. I build parties in reverse. Some say that's not normal and I should book a venue first. I don't do things normally. I pick a date first and I invite you. Then you invite friends. Then I talk to some DJs. If enough people RSVP, I sniff around for loft spaces or other unique locations. I can usually convince a property owner to let me hijack their space at the last minute for my immersive experience of music and dance. Featuring Djs: D_Juice, Peter Munch, and Tektite. thought as New Yorkers, again, find Coney Island in the news. And on

MANSON: The Musical @ Kraine Theater, 85 E 4th Street
$18; You've got to have a pretty twisted sense of humor to appreciate a singing, dancing Manson Family — and with tunes like "Put My Dick in Your Hand," and lots of simulated sex, it's a raunchy song and dance, too. But for plenty of us, it's hilarious. EndTimes has adapted the show from an acclaimed production by Chicago improv stalwarts the Annoyance Theater, and to great effect. Part history, part farce, the show follows the Family from beginning to incarcerated end, with ingenious interludes by Manson collaborators and buddies, such as the Beatles, the Monkees, and the Beach Boys. From Linda Kasabian to Sharon Tate and Bugliosi, the gang's all here. And they're irreverent and funny as hell.
