******* Ongoing******

December 9th-January 1st 12:00-6:00pm

Pankabestia: Punk Beasts of the Swimming Cities of Serenissima @ Anonymous Gallery, 169 Bowery
Traveling from the Karst region of Slovenia to Venice, Italy, Swoon and 30+ artists braved the waters of the Adriatic Sea and navigated a fleet of three intricately hand crafted v
essels. The exhibition includes artwork, objects, and a series of performances based on the "Swimming Cities" invasion. The environment/experience will include large-scale wall drawings, original Swimming Cities boat installations, portions of the ships, found objects acquired from sea, performances from the original members of the journey, beautiful photographic documentation from artist Tod Seelie, and art from Spy Emerson, Monica Canilao and many others. Wednesday through Sunday. http://anonymousgallery.com/art

December 21st-January 1st Monday - Friday 12:00-5:00pm

Xmas: a video and sculpture installation @ Chashama 266 Window Space, 266 West 37th Street
Free; Xmas pokes fun at the holiday onslaught of commercial advertizing. Light and paper sculptures are cheery and cheesy with a dark twist. Traditional Christmas song lyrics are modified to reflect our recessionary reality as we ring in a new decade. www.chashama.org

December 26th-January 3rd 11:00am-4:00pm on the hour

Short Films by Pixar @ Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave, Queens

$7 suggested donation; With its ballooning list of all-ages favorites — from Toy Story to WALL-E — Pixar has become the byword for animated excellence. This Midas touch extends to its shorts too, and over the holiday break, MoMI offers a roll-call of its best miniatures. The amusing 16-minute program screens at the top of each hour, and includes the studio's first film, Luxo, Jr, by John Lasseter. Other titles on the timeline include For the Birds, Ralph Eggleston's lesson in comeuppance; Jack-Jack Attack, Brad Bird's extra scene with the baby of the superhero Parr family from The Incredibles; and Presto, Doug Sweetland's sketch about a star magician and his disgruntled rabbit.

December 23rd-January 16th T 1:00-6:00pm; W-S 11:00am-6:00pm; Sun 2:00-6:00pm

Rock Garden @ Salon 94 Freemans, 1 Freeman Alley

Free; The downtown outpost of uptown gallery Salon 94 presents a blissed-out group show of work based on Zen Buddhist rock gardens. Contemporary artists Benjamin Valenza, Paula Hayes, Martha Friedman, Olaf Breuning, and others reinforce the idea of gardens as "mindscapes," conceptual as well as physical spaces for contemplation. The gallery is fresh off a re-look by Takeshi Miyakawa, who created a new entry from plexiglas boxes; Benjamin Valenza's sculptures riff on the philosopher's stone, while a white epoxy chandelier by Pae White (first exhibited at this year's Venice Biennale) hangs above the interior garden.

December 23rd

Cartoons in Conflict @ Storefront, 6 West 26th St

This unique event gathers the work of 40 political cartoonists from around the world, including Pulitzer Prize-winners Pat Oliphant and Jim Morin. For this exhibition, co-presented by grassroots advocacy organizations Parents Circle/Families Forum and No Longer Empty (which uses formally empty storefronts and as creative exhibition spaces), featured artists share their side on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, often using wit and humor to stir up discussion and to underline the importance of levity in even the most serious issues.

Chinese and a Movie Double Feature @ 92Y Tribeca, 200 Hudson St

$25; As the story goes, many Jews end up in Chinese restaurants on Christmas. Neither party really wants to make much fuss over the holiday, so what better than to purchase and prepare, respectively, spring rolls and beef lo mein? 92YTribeca understands this, and here it has combined an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet with a couple of faux-Westerns from director Mel Brooks. 1974’s Blazing Saddles tells the story of a black sheriff facing off against a corrupt politician—and includes a Yiddish-speaking Indian chief!—while 1987’s Spaceballs makes Borscht Belt fodder of George Lucas’ iconic space Western, that odyssey known as Star Wars. "May the Schwartz be with you," indeed.

Frankestein & Edward Scissorhands & Cabinet of Dr. Caligari @ MoMA, 11 W 53rd St

The Tonight Show Showcase @ Comix, 353 W 14th St

$5; Tonight's show is a great opportunity to see up-and-coming comedians before they appear on The Tonight Show. We're rooting for Reggie Watts, an awesomely talented downtown performer with a sly sense of humor. Equal parts musician and performance artist, Watts uses little more than his voice to improvise intricate compositions for his audiences.
