There could be a few subtle things happening here, so the following thoughts may be off base.
I think I would normally expect MCNP to look for `xsdir` by default, and only use the `xsdir_mcnp6.2` if explicitly told to do so. This can be done in the first line of the input file or on the command line.
Alternatively, many people may have a symbolic link named `xsdir` that points to the `xsdir_mancp6.2` file.
