Walmartcustomers in the US were treated to four exclusive bonus tracks, including unreleased tracks "Fair to You" and "Still Alone", plus Walmart Live Soundcheck versions of "Mama Africa" and "I Wanna Love You". The Platinum Edition of the album, issued in 2007, came complete with the new single "Sorry Blame It On Me", a new track entitled "Rush", and a remix of "Don't Matter". Some editions of the album also came packaged with a bonus DVD, containing a thirty-minute documentary and three music videos. "Smack That", "I Wanna Love You" and "Don't Matter" were certified 3 platinum by RIAA. Also "Never Took the Time" was released as promotional single on October 16, 2007.[12] Snoop Dogg, under the moniker Snoop Lion, recorded a cover of "Tired of Runnin'" for his debut reggae album, Reincarnated.

Konvicted debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 284,000 copies that week.[13] The album was able to stay within the top twenty for 28 consecutive weeks, but eventually started to drop slowly. On November 19, 2007, the RIAA certified Konvicted 3 platinum status with 3 million units sold in the United States. The album became the second best selling record of the year on the Billboard 200 charts.[14]'

Akon's increasing popularity led to him making numerous guest appearances on other artists' songs:[1] in 2005, he appeared on the singles "Baby I'm Back" by Baby Bash and "Soul Survivor" by Young Jeezy, which charted at number 19 and number four on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively.[2] His second studio album, Konvicted, was released the following November to further commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 and the top twenty of many international albums charts,[3] as well as subsequently being certified triple Platinum by the RIAA.[1][4] The singles "Smack That", "I Wanna Love You" and "Don't Matter" all achieved commercial success worldwide, with the former reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the New Zealand and UK singles charts,[6][7] and the latter two becoming his first songs to top the Hot 100.[2][3] Akon contributed guest vocals to a large number of commercially successful singles throughout 2007 and 2008: "The Sweet Escape" by singer Gwen Stefani, which reached number two on the Australian, New Zealand and UK singles charts as well as in the United States, "I Tried" by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, "Bartender" by T-Pain, "Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)" by Wyclef Jean and "Dangerous" by Kardinal Offishall, among several others.[2][6][7][8]

Although the songs are all in Spanish, it did not in anyway hinder my ability to listen to the album and get something out of it. I am personally of the belief that music can transcend language and can bring people together just based on the sound alone. Even if the song is in a different language, there is still thought and emotion expressed that can still provide a certain experience for a listener, although likely different from the one of someone who speaks that language.

His next album, Akonda, is set to be released Oct. 18 and will feature tracks from the Afrobeat genre. After that will come Konnect, which will contain songs of the R&B and hip hop genres, which will be familiar to listeners to his older fare.

In a recently published article Akon Delivers New Album AKONDA, it was reported that Global icon Akon is reconnecting with his West African heritage to release an album Akonda, his fifth studio album under his Akonik Label.

R&B singer Akon was born Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam in St Louis. He is of Senegalese descent. He rose to prominence in 2004 following the release of "Locked Up," the first single from his debut album Trouble. His second album Konvicted was even bigger. He has also appeared as the featured artist on many hit singles and has also produced for many big artists.

LOS ANGELES - Akon, an R&B star who's collaborated with everyone from Eminem to Andy Samberg, is about to release his first albums in seven years - but you won't find them in stores or on streaming services like Spotify. Instead, he plans to release four albums through a new app, making him the latest artist to experiment with bypassing big record labels and traditional music distribution altogether.

The new app, called Stadium, will let fans stream Akon songs for free, although they'll have to put up with ads. But interacting with the app by clicking the ads or sharing with friends on Facebook will earn users credits they can use to "buy" digital goods such as ringtones, wallpapers and an Akon-styled emoji. And, of course, to unlock more songs and unreleased videos.

"It's going to definitely regenerate the music business," Akon said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, calling his app "the answer" to the music industry's problems. "It's going to take someone like me to take the chance on it."

It's not a bad deal for Akon junkies; it lets them stream otherwise unavailable new music legally from their smartphones. For artists like Akon, this kind of independent digital route offers other major advantages - among them, sidestepping Spotify, Pandora and their ilk. Many musicians resent those services for offering what artists consider a tiny cut of streaming revenue.

That's a big issue in the music industry, where sales of downloaded music are falling while streaming is surging. Services like Pandora and Spotify argue that they give out the majority of their revenue to artists and labels and the amount will only grow as more people stream.

Artists' own apps, however, can garner them a greater slice of ad revenue, while also scooping up data on which songs fans like most and where they live. Musicians can use them to sell concert tickets, backstage passes and T-shirts and other merchandise.

By appifying himself and going independent, Akon aims to super-serve his 60 million-plus fans on social media. He said that roughly 200,000 people have already registered to receive the Stadium app when it's released in the next couple of weeks.

Other artists have gone down a similar road. Radiohead released "In Rainbows" as a pay-what-you-want album download in 2007. Lady Gaga debuted songs from "Born This Way" on a special version of the video game "FarmVille" in 2011, and last year U2 released "Songs of Innocence" as a free album to iTunes users, sponsored by Apple. Some acts - like Macklemore, Nine Inch Nails and The White Stripes - have foregone traditional record-label deals and thrived.
