Highly recommending this book on the MIT Media Lab written by Frank Moss, a former director.
Far and away the most inspirational book I've read in months; the mission to improve lives through technology and the bias to prototype is incredible. Frank Moss's constant tone of wonder gets to be a bit annoying, but the environment he describes is amazing.
I wonder if the media lab could be improved by an adjacent institution that accelerates prototypes path to market. Profits would be secondary. Getting new technologies to the world is primary. I would imagine this institution would have infrastructure / institutional knowledge / relationships to get nascent technologies off the ground without encumbering the inventors with bullshit they may/may not be good at.
