Hi,
Among the many projections that d3 offers, is d3.geo.albersUSA, which has two characteristics: Albers is used by the US Census Bureau, which makes it as close to an "official" projection as it gets, and d3's implementation is a composite one with special treatment for Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico (

Now there are lots of examples of USA maps out there. I am interested in making good maps at the country levels for other large countries.
I am both looking for settings for the projection proper, as well as for best practices or hacks such as the one used to scale down Alaska in the d3.geo.albersUSA function.
Has anyone worked on some kind of atlas of best projections? For instance, I'm aware that most countries in Europe use either a form of transverseMercator or conicConformal.
And what about Japan? Brazil? India? etc.(ftr, I'm trying to map maybe the 20 or 30 largest countries).
For instance for Japan, do people typically plot islands according to their geographic position, or do they try to make them closer than what they are / scale them so that most of the map surface is used?
Thanks!
