D3.js, CSS3 3d transforms and Hardware acceleration

Hi,

I have searched for this a little but wasn't really able to find too much. Here are two posts:


For speeding things up, it seems to have great potential though and it would be awesome to see some more examples or tutorials that cover it in more detail. 
Normal transforms as shown in many of the map examples would be a start. But I was also wondering whether it's possible to push this further. Think about changing the position of a large number of points in a scatterplot, which often go smoothly but I have already experienced lag. So would it be possible to move the points not with svg transitions but instead with translate3d? Would that bring any performance advantages through the hardware acceleration?
Any other steps that can be taken to tap the potential of hardware acceleration without moving from svg to canvas?
