3D wireframe mesh overlayed on map - examples ?

I'm interesting in using D3 to overlay a map of a country with (what I think is called) a 3D wireframe mesh. The height of the mesh at a given point represents the recorded air temperature at the point in the country.

I'm talking about something like this:

I was wondering if anyone could point me at an example (or a plugin) which does something similar ?

D3 is not typically used with 3D technologies. You should maybe use Three.js, WebGL or even Processing.js. But you can have a look at these examples if you insist for using D:

Thanks for the advice. Reading your post I realised I had become fixated on D3 because I'd been using it for something else. The Three.js examples you gave are spot on and that '3D animation using X3DOM' is pretty good too.
