gradients to limit width of displayed text

Here's an example of using gradients to hide the end of a long line of text. I just add a translated gradient for each datum and then reference it in the text's 'fill' attribute.

Any ideas on getting this to work on Android [3.2] devices? It renders these as equal-width lines of grey text.
