This is a general alert that all SRD websites I own are in the process of being converted to Wordpress from Google Sites. This means that once they are fully converted I will need to add you as an editor to the new formats. Right now the timeline has all sites other than d20pfsrd.com being fully converted by end of November 2016. All of the existing Google sites are locked for edits EXCEPT the 5e SRD and Pathfinder SRD. The 5e SRD will be locked Friday 11/11 and a general freeze on new content will last 1 week while editors are invited to the new Wordpress sites. If you are not familiar with editing Wordpress sites I and my conversion specialist will be putting some documentation together to help the transition. Note that this conversion is being done proactively because Google is rolling out Google Sites 2.0 which does not, and is not expected to, support Google Adsense. If you do not already know, Google Adsense ad click revenue generates 80-ish percent of my family income so a conversion to a platform which will continue to support Adsense is an absolute requirement.

Also, the SRD websites will now also appear under a "parent" website called opengamingnetwork.com, which is just meant to be a central organizing point for all of the SRD websites.

I'll be happy to take comments/questions here.

John,
Great news!  Sorry for the hassle, but you are moving to a good platform.  You will finally be able to template things too! What is your dev using to scrape the google sites?

Thanks Bernie!

I am still very rough at editing the new sites also so it's going to be a learning experience for me for sure. Now, on this subject, a decent amount of effort and time has gone into building and testing the process on the lesser used SRD sites before being attempted on the beast that is d20pfsrd.com. I am planning to run a Kickstarter to raise funds to make the new SRD sites 100% massive improvements in features and options for users, including options for users to subscribe to remove ads etc.

John,
Sounds good.  Scope out https://codex.wordpress.org/Post_Type_Templates - creating taxonomies for content containers can seriously streamline editor messes.  If your dev is not already on this, you should look at installing a wordpress multi-site (https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/ultimate-guide-multisite/), so editors can traverse multiple sites through the same credentials.

If your dev is up for a convo, I'm happy to chip in brain power and a couple bucks.  I tried to bug you into doing this years ago!

Plus some custom code to process the output to strip out unneeded parts and reformat to better fit into the new page templates.

Hiya,
Yes, it's multisite :)  I've been considering taxonomies for a few things, like indicating content types (monster, rules, etc.) as well as sources to auto-generate a custom Section 15 notice for each page.

Am *more* than happy to have a chat some time, too! :)

Note to all: I have locked down all SRDs for editing except d20pfsrd.com. Matt will be generating some user info documents for editing the new sites. Note also that while the sites are now LIVE on the new platform, this is still a testing phase. That is, we (you, I, Matt) are all working through any issues we come across before we try this on the big site (d20pfsrd.com.) Also, this will be a time to post your comments, observations, wishlist items, or complaints so that we as editors (and users) of the sites can make sure the next generation is a vastly more useful set of resources than even before.

Also, it may be good (or not) if you have a specific SRD you will be editing, vs. same access to all of them. Meaning if you only ever expect to edit the Mutants & Masterminds SRD we can add you to just that one, or you can have the same access to all of the SRDs under this new scenario (I believe).

To all who want to have edit access to an SRD site I own:

These are the default WordPress roles:
  • Subscriber - You have no special rights other than ability to log into the site.
  • Contributor - You can add a new page which is queued for an admin to publish, and edit pages you create.
  • Author - You can add new pages and publish them, plus edit pages you create.
  • Editor - You can add new pages, edit existing pages, and publish them.
  • Administrator - As Editor, but also has rights to reconfigure the site itself. This will be limited to myself (John) and 1-2 others.
For now I want to make the highest user level "contributor" just so I can see how the queuing and approving process works. I will likely make everyone an editor by default after testing the queuing/approving process.

There will likely be a new role added later that allows add/edit but not publish, so you have the ability to make changes but someone else needs to approve it.  We can also look at any other roles that aren't covered by the above.

I've added Roberto Kingsley as a contributor to the 5e SRD.

I need to know WHICH SRDs you want contributor access to so I can add you AND an email address and desired username. You can email that info to me separately if you wish.

I just now sent invites to everyone who provided me both an email address and desired username. The PF conversion doesn't exist yet so if you requested edit access to that one it won't be until the site is ready.

Hiya,

Yep - if you let me know the ID and email you want I can set up access to the guide and SRDs (if it's the Pathfinder one, that'll be available to poke at after all the current testing is done, but I can still get you access to the contributor guide in the meantime)

No worries, I've seen what happens when what appears to be a perfectly innocent little plugin suddenly allows uploading of .php code rather than a picture, and suddenly boom.  I'm reviewing the code on anything that goes in there and avoiding anything that allows file uploads by users outside of the media library in the core.

I've been going over the entire install, locking down everything that can be locked down, making sure only the application directories themselves allow code execution, write-protecting anything that shouldn't ever need writing to, and putting monitors on for any unauthorized file changes.  There's also a backup system that currently allows for a rollback to any previous day (and once I've finished work on it, differentials as close to 30 minutes apart).  The server itself is protected by a firewall that only has a couple of ports open.   Part of phase two will be jailing the entire WordPress install.

It's also worth mentioning the reason why it's the most exploited CMS - it currently has over 50% of the CMS market share, making it one of the most attractive targets.  I'm also considering a bit of "security through obscurity" by masking the WordPress' URL scheme so it isn't easily detectable as a WordPress site.

While things are stil in the initial stages you should really check out the DIvi theme, amazing and scalable. Best theme I've ever worked with.

Also, essential plugins:

Starting to get my head above water finally so I'll be bouncing back into the mix soon. Just thought I'd toss these your way, they make managing large WP sites a LOT easier.

Hi, looks like I missed this thread. I'd like to stay on as an editor for PF.

I know this is late, but I'd like to be added back to PF, and if you plan on keeping a Starfinder SRD once it's out, I'd like to be added to that too. I didn't do much on PF (fixed the potions page, and the occasional grammar/spelling error), but I just noticed today that there's an entire mechanic missing (Faction Prestige points from Faction guide)... and while I remember reading this, it didn't dawn on me that I'd need to speak up. (Didn't really expect to be of help again).

Thanks
