Must He Repeat Himself?

The vast language of an author is utilized in their novels to help
further extend character and plot development. In Charles Dicken’s
novel A Tale of Two Cities specific words used and repeated help
foreshadow the ending of the story as well. Also, language parallels
and comparisons are used to add to the context of the book. The way
that Dickens depicts female characters and associates them with
sinister acts also adds to the full quality of the novel. The way that
Charles Dickens repeats specific words in his story gives strength to
characters, also develops the character itself and the plot, and adds
a hidden message to add to the quality of the novel.
This essay will be written in a 5 paragraph standard format with an
introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion
paragraph as well. The way I form my body paragraphs will result in a
good flow for the essay to help the readers mindset as he/she reads on
and will enhance my essay. The introductory paragraph will briefly
skim the context of what will be in the essay itself and in what order
it will be displayed. The first body paragraph will be the way
Dicken’s uses female connotations as a way to strengthen women in
general. The next body paragraph will be the use of the word “Blood”
in the book and how it relates to Wine/how wine represents it and the
duality behind the scenes with blood in them. The third, and final,
body paragraph will discuss the Rebirth and Resurrection that occurs
in the book over and over again and discuss several different ways
that Dickens puts them into the story. The conclusion paragraph will
round up all of the points made in the essay to remind the reader of
main ideas.
Body Paragraph 1 TS: Charles Dickens uses female connotations
throughout the book to strengthen female characters. Mention “La
Force” (La=Female) ... Madame Defarge composing a grotesque
revolution... and the Guillotine being referred to as “she.” (chapter
1, Book 1=Defarge’s description of the guillotine)
Body Paragraph 2 TS: Dicken’s use of blood throughout the story adds
to the lower classes intentions and also relates to the bible.
(Chapter 5, Book 1-Casket falling scene) The way that all the people
crowd over the wine shows how desperate they are for any type of
nutrition. The man who writes “blood” on the wall also changes the
message of this casket scene in a way to depict the people drinking
the wine as zombies by the way they crowd and scavenge this “blood.”
This blood and wine affiliation also represents the blood of Christ
and to add a religious tone to the novel with the idea of “Christ is
inside everyone, despite the dark times.”
Body Paragraph 3 TS: Furthermore, The words and ideas of “Rebirth and
Resurrection” reoccur in A Tale of Two Cities to add to the context
of the novel. The scenes that will be discussed will be the scene in
which Carton sacrifices himself for Darnay and his family. (To allow
them to be reborn into a different country; Christ affiliation as
well) The revolution itself will be discussed as well as Dr. Manette
being freed from the Bastille in Book 1.
