JOIN US in Di’anmen on the weekend of March 3-4 for a temporary thaw in the proto-Spring cold.

It’s SALLY CAN’T DANCE 2012, the fourth annual festival of Chinese experimental music. Things got started in 2008 when free jazz saxman Li Tieqiao threw a two-day jamboree at Wudaokou noise den D-22 (RIP), barreled through 2009 and hit a peak in 2010 when Subjam label boss Yan Jun helmed the festival and coordinated a massive international, inter-generational jam with visiting UK improv master Fred Frith.

Now Zhu Wenbo (Zoomin’ Night) and Josh Feola (pangbianr.com) are bringing Sally back in 2012. This year’s lineup draws on young and old and reaches well beyond the Beijing-Shanghai bipole, bringing musicians from every corner of the rugged mainland.

Expect two all-day blowouts of blown out free jazz, harsh noise, minimal electronics, refracted feedback, abused brass, mangled strings, meditative buzzes, and other sonic experiences of mysterious or dubious origin.

The venue: an unadorned, as yet unnamed, white-wall tabula rasa that will become a new home for Beijing’s wayward musical youth and elder statesmen alike. It’s tucked behind a roasted chestnut stand at the southwest corner of Di’anmen Inner St. x Di’anmen West St. x Di’anmen East St. (MAP HERE)

Tickets: 80 RMB per day (60 RMB for students)
2-day pass: 150 RMB (100 RMB for students)
