How to apply layout to CyNode objects?

Hello,

I'm looking for information on how I can customize my CyNode objects. Two
things I want to do:
* I want to add additional attributes to it (apart from ID I'd like to specify
what type (DNA, RNA, Protein...) a node has)
* I want to apply VizMapper properties to the node (change shape and color).

Is this possible through the API? Any pointers to tutorials on how to do
this?
