Dear Cytoscape-helpdesk team,

I am using STRING app on Cytoscape for protein-protein interaction network of C. elegans proteins. I used wormbase ID as queries and it has been working for me all the time until recently it always said "annotation not found". When I tried to import the whole database from STRING,  i got below error:

But the STRING webpage is working normally.
I am using Cytoscape 3.10.4 and STRING App 2.2.0.

Could you please let me know if it's caused by unavaibility of the remote server and when it could be fixed?

Thank you,
Maoting

Hi,
Broken for me too. It looks like stringdb is having issues, they have a banner on the top of their site noting the service disruption:

They were hacked and are in the process of restoring everything.  Hopefully they'll be up by early next week.

Thank you for the info! But it seems that we can still use the STRING webpage normally and import the result to the cytoscape, right?

Last I checked, I wasn't able to use STRING directly either...

I just uploaded a list of C.elegans gene ID on the STRING webpage and tried to query the protein-protein interactions. It seems to function normally -- as least I was able to get the network. Maybe depend on the analysis type and species database?

Hi,

I recently set up the VCell-AI / Cytoscape-related workflow locally and noticed similar dependency issues when external services are unavailable.

In such cases, would it be helpful to add:

  • better error handling in the app

  • fallback messaging when external APIs (like STRING) are down

  • or cached/local fallback options

I’d be happy to explore contributing improvements in this area.

Thanks!

Hi team,

I came across the thread regarding the STRING database network error in Cytoscape. Just wanted to check in. Has the issue been resolved? Is the STRING app working normally again?

Thanks!

Hi,
I think it might be working again, the outage banner is no longer on the string site: https://string-db.org/
