We currently purchase Tris-EDTA buffer solution, pH 8.0 commercially from Sigma-Aldrich.  We are a clinical lab and need to have a valid expiration date for every reagent.  Since it does not have a manufacturer expiration date assigned, we currently give it a year expiration from date opened. However, find we use very little of the reagent before it expires and need to discard the rest.

What expiration/shelf life do other labs use for this reagent?  I have seen a range of dates on-line ranging from 3months (prepared in house) to 36 months.  Any help would be appreciative. Thank you in advance!

After the expiry date you set, test it again if it still works for your experiments (after validation) give it another 6 months.

I think, you can find the expiration date of Sigma-Aldrich's products in their web-site, for every batch. If not, try to do it from thei distributor in your country. Any way, we are freezing aliquots and thawing it before using.
