We are looking for any help/study guides/books for new technologists
looking to become certified in Cytogenetics from ASCP. Any help from
the group would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Lisa good luck with the exams and study, the following reading list is
probably the best of the best with regards to practical cytogenetics:

1 Barch MJ editor. The ACT cytogenetics laboratory manual. 2nd ed.
New York: Raven Press; 1991.

2. Miron PM. Preparation, culture and analysis of amniotic fluid
samples. Current protocols in human genetics. New York: John Wiley &
Sons Inc.; 1995. p8.3.1.-8.3.6

3. Warburton D. Preparation and culture of products of conception and
other solid tissues for chromosome analysis. Current protocols in
human genetics. New York: John Wiley & Sons Inc.; 1995. p8.5.1.-8.5.6

The cytogenetics program at MD Anderson Cancer Center sells a great guide as well as offers a cytogenetic review course each year fee for service.

The Foundation for Genetic Technology sells a very reasonably priced book, The Cytogenetics Study Guide, written especially for those getting ready to take the exam. It follows the old NCA content outline exactly covering each topic area. Since there have been no changes yet to the certification exam as given by ASCP it is still applicable. Try this link http://www.agt-info.org/Default.aspx, which takes you to FGT's home page. Look under publications for ordering information.

I must disclose that I am the primary author of the study guide. I've received many notes and letters from technologists telling me they would not have passed the exam without it.

The Association of Genetic Technologists Cytogenetics Laboratory Manual, available from the AGT website, is very good for more in depth details. Some parts are now getting a bit outdated, but the basic information, which is what is needed for the exam, is still there and good. It does not follow the exam content outline but is an invaluable resource for background information, theory and protocols.

Good Luck,
Betty

My favorite book is "Principles of Clinical Cytogenetics" Ed. Gersen and Keagle.  Not only informative but well written, so it's an easy read.
