At that time, the school had been shuttered for nearly 20 years. But it was close to where Soop lived with his grandparents and he would often enter the old grounds on a dare, even though he was officially forbidden to set foot in the place. His uncle was the late Everett Soop, who would go on to become a renowned political cartoonist. But, at the time, he was known to young Alex as Uncle Buno and he introduced his nephew to oral storytelling, a proud Blackfoot tradition, by way of spine-tingling tales of horror set among the ruins of a place where real-life horror had taken place generations earlier.

Everyone is just about to fill their bowl in Atlanta, GA. I live in New Haven, CT and bring this everywhere I go (with the addition of a heaping teaspoon of turmeric). Everyone loves it. Thanks for this!

Slowly stream in all the milk, while constantly stirring vigorously. Add the water, the garlic head and the parm rinds and bring to a simmer. Season with a big pinch of salt. Reduce the heat to low, to the point where there’s barely any bubbles simmering in the soup and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, for 10 to 15 minutes, until slightly thickened.

I just started my paleo/whole30 lifestyle 8 days ago. I followed your recipe to a T. I measured each ingredient and followed the recipe exactly, but my soup looks nowhere as good as yours. Mine is a weird dark green/hunter green color. Although it looked nothing like your soup, the taste was absolutely divine. I am not a soup fan at all, but this soup made me fall in love with soups and now I want to make soup everyday.

One of the vegetarian soups that night was a beautiful shade of yellow-orange. It was a light-bodied, curry-spiced coconut broth thickened with cooked red lentils and structured with yellow split peas. It appeared to be a beautiful take on lentil soup. When I asked Holly to tell me about it, she mentioned it was based on an Ayurvedic dal recipe in the Esalen Cookbook, a favorite of hers. I suspect that recipe might have been inspired by the Bengali-style cholar dal where you see chana dal punctuated with raisins in many preparations.

I hope you enjoy this as much as we have over the last decade or so! Here's where you can find all the soup recipes, if you want to explore more. And there are lots of lentil recipes in the archives as well.

I really would like a response to my question. I googled videos of how to make a roux and it looks smooth and creamy with just butter and flour. One chef said it should smell nutty as the flour cooks. Mine came out crumbly and not anywhere near smooth until I added all of the half-and-half in to the butter and flour. Should it have been smooth and creamy before the half-and-half? Or was that liquid intended to make it smooth and creamy?

Thank you!!!!!!! I love this. I live in Portland, Oregon where the streets are currently littered with chestnuts. I have been working to decrease/eliminate plastic, and have been struggling with finding household cleaning products to that end. I will be picking up some chestnuts on my walk today!

And I was just sick for a whole week straight where all I wanted was a bowl of soup. During that time, I took my position as a sick person to my advantage and thought about every soup I would want to eat in that very moment. Pickle soup was one of the top contenders. What’s happening to the rest of the soups you may ask? You’ll get them.

We have a ritual in our kitchens where we start each morning by making homemade broth. Broth is essential for many of our sauces, and we start with a fresh batch every day. So whoever gets to the kitchen first has the honor.
