Hi all

INFORMATION ONLY .....  I am part of a Committee fighting for a NDM (National Defence Medal) for all those who served after WW2 and that will include all former National Servicemen.  You may have seen some National publicity on the subject and articles in Soldier magazine....

In addition, I have been personally pushing for 4 years, or more, to have the GSM (Cyprus) qualifying time reduced to 30 days from 120 to be in  line with all other GSM's. Many National servicemen missed the medal by a few days, because their 2 years was completed. MoD argues it is not policy to revisit concerns after 5 years has elapsed. Then about 4 years ago that issued a GSM for the SUEZ... 50 years . after the fact.

It would be appreciated if  all member would write to their M P and demand equal treatment and recognition for service to Queen and country....

I have the new GSM (South Arabia)  I was in Steamer Point .(1966). It was approved on 1964 (Army Orders 64)

It is the same colours Green/Purple/Green but NOT in equal thirds like the Cyprus medal .... the center purple is wider....  Google it and you will see the actual ribban.

HOWEVER, the name of the GSM (xxxxx) has since changed and is now known as the OSM = Operations Service Medal and ribban different colours entirely. Have look at that also

I suggest you write and ask for the GSM (Arabian Peninsula) giving them, your details and dates.... Do not accept the BAR...

The new Ribban... makes it a new medal

I left the RAF after Steamer Point and 28 years later, I then discovered my entitlement when I was researching a Police Chief here in Canada wearing The Korean War Medal. The U.N. (Korea) and Queens Coronation Medal. So, I wrote and asked for it and about 6 weeks late I got it in the mail.  Regarding the police Chief... He was a 18 years old and not even a resident of the U.K.  when she was crowned ....  His Resume stated under WAR Service ,,,, British Navy Korean war.... Radio/Navigation Officer

Another Walter Mitty

B.S.   He was a merchant seaman 4th Class Radio Operator. The closest he got to Korea was Mombassa (East Africa) It turned out the medal were bought in a Flea Market in Scotland and the engraved medal was issued to Pvte. Mitchell, British Army.. It was quite a story and headline news. The RCMP were involved and refused to lay charges, but I did, under Section 419 of the Criminal Code and nailed him... However, they put a publicity ban on the proceedings and the courtroom was cleared, but word got out.

Hi Pete,

The Clasp ARABIAN PENINSULA to the 1918 GSM was authorised on 22nd February 1961.  The qualification is 30 days service in the Colony and adjacent Protectorates between 1st January 1957 and 30 June 1960.  Because this was a retrospective award, many guys had been there, done it, gone home, been domobbed, and therefore knew nothing about it.
I was one of them.

I understand there is provision for guys who served in Cyprus and were then transferred to Aden prior to completing the Cyprus qualification to receive both both Clasps.

You should apply to:-

Service Personnel & Veterans Agency
Joint Personnel Administration Centre
MOD Medal office
Building 250
Imjin Barracks
Gloucester  GL3 1HW

Free Phone:  0800-085-3600

You can also find information concerning the Aden Veterans Association (if you havn't already done so) at www.adenveterans.org.uk

Sincerely,

Cheers Vic, I already have the clasp for Arabian Peninsula.  I served in Trucial Oman not Aden...Been back a couple of times since and going again this April, Fascinating country. Its just that someone mentioned it should have been a different medal to cyprus , but having checked it seems this came out later than my service 57/8. And you are right about people not knowing, I waited approx 45 yrs for my clasp  Regards Pete
