Hi Brian Rodgers,
I’ve been copied into the CypVets mails. I’m a military historian working on a really detailed account of all the British ops in the Emergency. I see you were in Maiwand Bty of 29 Fd Regt RA. I think Sgt Cutliffe and Sgt Robinson’s on that battery ‘s wives were the two ladies so disgracefully murdered in Hermes Street in FamaG on 3 Oct 58. Were you in the Regt there at that time ? Would you be prepared to tell me as much as you can about that day,and the funeral only 2 days later ? I’ve got some fine accounts from witnesses, one of them the rear link op on Lt Col Wheeler’s Rover which was round the corner from Hermes Street and was on scene in seconds. And from some 227 Coy RMP guys.
I look fwd to hearing from you.
Regds

minesweepers at Famagusta.
Hi, I was with 145(Maiwand)Fld Battery. 29 Fld Regt.Didn't realise we put blokes on the minesweepers.
Interesting!
Cheers

Hi James Smith,
I was copied your mail re Cyprus District Sigs Regt. I’m a military historian working on a very detailed account of all the British ops right through the Emergency, and I was hoping you could tell me more about The Ladies to add to what info I already have on that phase. One of the ladies, now a widowed grandma in Lancs gave me a full account of how she got out there (she volunteered and was out in the Families Shop in \Nicosia within 3 weeks ) and the way of life for the fine females. An RMP who was in 227 Coy in Famagusta told me that inside 6 or 7 months almost all of them were back in UK pregnant. What’s the truth in that please ?
Also, re Cyprus District Sigs Regt, do you remember S/Sgt Craig the chief clerk ? He’s written me two long letters.
And can you tell me more re G Troop. One of my old bosses in British telecom was Col Leahy - do you remember him ? Ex-Army commando from WW2, very tough old bird he was. Frequently crashed his private motor even as a senior manager !
Look fwd to hearing if I can get my system to send this mail. PS you could be in my book if you come back to me. Many other boys will be.
Regds

I was with Cyprus District Signal Regiment -August58 to May 59,then posted out, first Tripoli then Aden.I was working as one of the controllers to the various radar sites gathering plots ,along with Navy and Raf operators, consequently I have certain memories of events when I was on watch. The bombing of the Naafi in RAF Nicosia and the later arrival of "The Ladies" God bless them.Iwas also on watch when Maj Andrews and Gunner Jasper were mined on Elia track, I was asked to pass a message to 188 bty to inform them that "Sunray was down" a sad but dramatic moment. I then moved to G Troop which was the jamming troop based at Laketamia along side the dog training unit and ammo depot, then detachments at Limmasol(there when Buddy Holly was killed)and then to Famagusta in the corner of Karolis Camp, under the tall aeriel masts. The navy lads were living in Worsley Bks and one I remember Des Fox was courting an RSM's daughter. When the peace arrived we packed our kit and took it to Camp K for backloading and we as a troop were dispersed,me to Libya some to Malta and the unlucky ones back to the Regiment. Now as the years go by I really think we in Cyprus have been forgotten, but that is the lot of us who served, and this probably goes back to the time Alfred the great. What matters is that we never forget those who went before us and those who are serving now.

There is obviously something not quite right with the way that the web site is set up as messages should either go to a forum or directly to the person intended.
The way that it operates at present is to clog up the mail system.
It would be appreciated if the web master could sort this one out.
Many thanks
Ken

Hi there Bill, , thanks for replying , yes I remember the 29th field regt . we use to eat in their cook house , and that awful business with the murdered Ladies . The jamming station was supposed to be secret , one of your officers tried to come in , but the corporal through the gate told him politely to get lost , he jumped up and down, screamed he put us all on a charge , one phone call and he never came back , , I am in contact with a Nigel coplin , ,he was in the 29th and guarded our camp , do you remember him , . the guy I'm after is in the Signals named Smith , all the best , John
