Anyone out there from 79 - Cyprus 1957 / 58. I joined 79 in Düsseldorf just 6 weeks before it was withdrawn to Chiseldon in Wilts with the rest of the 29th Field to take on reinforcements before sailing to Cyprus on the Empire Clyde in June 1957.

I was in BHQ Troop Battery admin with Alan Ladbrooke, and Johnny Hill and known as "Big Taff." - served in Karaolos, Boghaz, and Akrades .

Particular friends then included Mike Coleman, Tony Munns, Colin Pelling, and Terry O'Brien. We were all on same patrol roster and riot squad - and John "Taff" Thomas from 145 (Maiwand) who, with Mike, we had gone right through together from the 68th. In Oswestry.

Sailed home in late August 1958 on Empire Fowey out of Limassol.

Ring any bells?

It I see not often that I come across someone out there during the same years as myself. My name is Mike and I went to RAF Nicosia on 27 September 1957 and from thence to RAF Kormakiti in the north west until the end of the year. Posted to RAF Ayios Nikolaos near Famagusta, the RAF Signals Centre for Cyprus. Served there throughout 1958 and came back to be demobbed in February 1959.

Hi Mike,  our Unit, 238 Army Vehicle Park RAOC were billeted within 625 Ord Depot RAOC, four mile point, right opposite your RAF camp.  Our Vehicle Park was behind a sub depot of 2 Wireless Regt where we were supplied with our supper when on guard duty.  I was there in 1957/58.  Our Unit was newly formed along with 243 AVP RAOC.   Our job was to look after the vehicles that the Reservists dumped there after Suez.

Thanks John. I seem to remember there were several camps down your side between us and 2 Wireless?
