I noticed today that the recently resurfaced and repainted Botley Road
has downgraded the cycle lane opposite Waitrose from mandatory to advisory.

I'm assuming this was incompetence, rather than a deliberate decision to
downgrade. I've filed it here:

No, this is planned. See the diagrams at at https://letstalk.oxfordshire.gov.uk/oxford_a420botleyroad_cycle2024

The advisory cycle lane should be considerably wider than the ?1m mandatory cycle lane that was there before - but can someone go out with a tape measure and see how reality compares with the consultation plans?  We've been let down here before...

Danny.

Thanks - I completely missed that consultation.

I've not actually cycled that way in a while, although that'll probably change soon if the path across the playing field to Willow Walk fully disappears under water.

Botley Road was such a mess, I don't think anyone bothered!

My recollection was it was all narrow advisory. But that might be the numerous patches. If solid, there should be a TRO.

They have removed the old lane further inbound and the road centre line, which makes stagecoach drivers really frightened, so that's probably why it's advisory: so buses can use the cycle lane (and the fat on board, can wreck it.  See Eynsham Rd as a classic example).

The correct thing to have done was their paper work and made a TRO for a mandatory bicycle & bus lane (for just 2 nearside wheels) rather than a conventional bus lane that bicycles are permitted in.

Highways don't have to consult, don't like to consult and clearly don't have the skills to.  They Just steal the cash from cycling along the B4044 and happy to spend it on ineffectual infra.

Would you support a bike/bus lane?

Paul, Forum,

My earlier reply was over 8mb with illustrations so here it is clipped.
I'll send some illustrations separately:

Paul, colleagues,

Thanks for your efforts.

The cycle lane width wiggles back and forth, which seems to me to not be in accordance with Highway Code changes. Or Active Travel England demands.

The drawings claimed a 1.9m width as part of the bus lay-by, opposite Waitrose entrance, but that’s not against a kerb. Looking at the ‘normal kerbs either side it will be less than 1.9m and is probably 1.5m as it was beforehand.

Much if not all the lanes in the narrower road to the east/station, were marked as mandatory, at 1.5m, and coloured (green).

This 1.5m Advisory is very retrograde.

And I guess no colour even though that was a ‘design officer response to an RS4 safety audit: -

- this is not dated in my photo file - which I copied 27/03/24. I don’t have a link to that safety audit but it is public.

Graham.

Photos outside Warlands and approaching the station, both sides are 1.5m. Mandatory, and coloured…

It definitely was mandatory before (confirmed on Google streetview).  Danny's link includes a draft TRO for the change in status - I assume that got approved.

Sigh.  Anyone able to join me tomorrow morning, with a tape measure?  I will print out the consultation plans and we can check how well they've actually been followed.

Danny.

Danny,
I could be but after a city centre GP appointment scheduled for 8.50.
Probably 09.30 earliest (unless things run smoothly when 9.15 might be possible).
Any good?

How about meeting at 10.30, say at Frideswide Square?

Danny.

For me a 10.30 meet is OK, but it’ll mean me going home for 45 minutes.
If your diary ‘wants’ 10.30 - then I’ll meet you then.

Make it 9.45 if that's easier!  And anyone who wants to is welcome to join us.

Danny.

Hi Danny

I can do this.  Just not sure of the timings.  I've got some removal men coming round between 8 & 10:30.

I could also do 4pm

I could be trusted to do it myself, but it would be faster and safer with 2.

I'll bring a tape measure.

I've also got some white Dulux oil paint somewhere.  Sticks like .... to a blanket, so if anyone wanted to join up the dots ------  I've got kgs of sparkles to add.

You can be sure they will reinstate the stop line at Ferry Hinksey Rd, to comply with the regs.

They won't be removing the weeds that are all over the kerbs at McDonald's

And I'm not telling you where stopping at a red light is optional, cus there's no white line across the road!

The joy is that actually the bus lane and carriageway are now far smoother than the cycle paths that have been built!

Give me a ring

Simon

I cycled back that way this evening, and the lanes are considerably wider than they were before in places. It's a shame that they are no longer mandatory, but on balance, I think it's an improvement.

They do vary in width somewhat randomly at various points.

I did notice that the cycle symbols shown in the eastbound bus lane on the plan don't appear to have materialised, which is a shame, as it would have been nice to have a visible reminder that bikes are allowed to use that lane.
