Hi guys,
could any of you provide me some (proved) files to test my hardware and GUI2? Preferably .GRB and .DRL files of some tiny board (if the board would be useful for anything, the better .-) )
So far I have not been successfull with all the design tools and conversions of their outcome... Thanks in advance
Jiri

I would also appreciate some testfiles

What are all the problems you are getting?  Please send me the files you are using and I can try to fix

Kobus,
I've tried Diptrace but crashed on elementary problems (not able to find header pin connector component, not able to set one side PCB routing only, ...). Then went to Eagle and drew the attached minimal PCB (I2C expander for LCD display actually).  Then used the Eagle's CAM Processor for generation of the output files. There are many formats and many options, so I tried some. In best case I was able to use te files to create in GUI2 the gcode for millling, but not for drilling (different scale?) nor the Outline. I have discarded these files I am afraid and do not want to bother you with them, but some general guidance how to progress would help -and not only to me, I guess.

Are these Eagle files?  I will get Eagle this weekend and have a look for you.  Normally with DipTrace you can create your components yourself.  If you follow the tutorial you will see how awesome it is.  I never created a PCB in my life and after going through the whole DipTrace tutorial, will take a couple hours, I could do so much.

Yes, these are Eagle files. (And to me it seems that Eagle is more intuitive...did not have any previous experience with it. )
Do I understand correctly that even Diptrace does not generate directly the files in the format needed by GUI2?

Yep DipTrace files need to be saved by Gerbv to fix some issues in the files so that Visolate can understand them.  I don't know which gcode's are breaking Visolate.  Was easier to just use gerbv to fix the files

Well, you will se that Eagle has actually many options with many parametres:

I downloaded Eagle 6.5

Open up Eagle
Click File Open | Board
Load the board you sent me
On the menu bar you will see the open file icon, save file icon, print file icon and then an icon with ugly colours.  Click that one.  It is the Start Cam Processor
It should select the correct layers and everything for you
Select device as gerber_rs274X
Save the file as something like IICexpBoard.grb
Click process job

Go to my app
Select IICexpBoard.grb for the circuit file
File converter none
Visolate manual and auto will work.  I see manual produces a different design than auto

There you have the gcode and you can move forward, I hope :)

Last night was the first time I actually connected the app to a controller with a motor on it.  Was awesome to actually see my app work

Kobus,
pleased to see your machine is alive!

I am not sure I understand correctly your description. I believed GUI2 needs all 3 files (Circuit, Drill, Cut), Do you say that .GRB file contains all the info needed?
I tried to select the layers needed and export them from Eagle with a proper CAM tool (gerber_rs274X and Excellon)... then to feed GUI2 with them. But the results did not fit together.

I see the problem was Eagle exported to inches.  Visolate changes inch circuits to mm, but the drill file was still inches.  The code I was using to create the drill file didn't detect the inches and it converted to mm.  I copied a new version of the app.  I also created a document so that people can see how to use Eagle to generate the files.  There is now also a Jiri directory in demo with the files I created

Kobus, excellent, this is what I needed. Thanks.
Regarding the board Outline - have you tried to process by CAM just layer 20 - Dimension?

I haven't tried it. I will have a look tomorrow. Didn't know which one to use for the outline. If I remember you shouldn't use visolate for the outline

Kobus,
several points:
- independent export of board outline with layer 20 does not work for me. In fact, the outline is part of  the circuit (board) file even if I deselect layer 20 when running the CAM tool.
- it is necessary to press the button "Fix Topology" in Visolate, otherwise disconnects pads from the routes (visible in your screenshot, too)
- scale of circuit and drill is OK now,  but there is some strange shift causing holes not matching the pads. Visible in Voronoi design, but even better here:

I have noticed that one and I don't know if it is a calculation problem when creating the hole gcode or a graphical problem or Visolate shifting the board.  You can offset the drill points on that screen if you click on the Drill tab and enter the offset coordinates.  I have seen other offsets with other boards so it doesn't seem to always go into the same direction

Hi,
not very successfull, I am afraid. Generated the g-code files (attached, marked as 1).
1. When trying to offset drill, after pushing the Execute button it says:
...
File loaded with 1 Warnings and 5 Errors
Checking
Unsupported command found!
...
and nothing happens.

2. Tried to apply offset (x=5, y=9) to Circuit layer. Visually helps, but the 3D view shows that the resulting g-code as totally errorneous (file marked as 2) and actually did not work when tried to mill after probing

3. Returned back and tried all from beginning without any offset. Probing screen attached, average probe value around -2.6mm, modified g/code attached. When trying to mill, the tool stays around 5 mm above PCB surface (obviously not going to -2.7 but +2.7 above zero).

Cool.  I will have a look tomorrow.  I am using the code from Patrick to offset so maybe I just need to get his new code for that.

Hi

I didn't forget about you.  I just didn't get to this yet.  Been suffering with another app this weekend and things are just not working.  I will get to the Cyclone software asap
