Chandra,

You may want to see if your library has this book, "The Bicycle Wheel", 3rd edition, author is Jobst Brandt, and published by Avocet, Inc.  My wife got me this book for my birthday last winter and I've used it to build some new wheels, and re-build some others.  I did refer to Sheldon's website also and found it to be really helpful.  I used my bike as the truing stand, just turned it upside down, and I made a crude, but fairly effective gauge to dish the wheel.  You can see it on my Feb. 15, 2009 post (http://bigoakbikes.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html).  Good Luck!

If your library doesn't have the book, you can get an inter-library loan. You can borrow my trying stand and maybe I ought to put together the post of when I built my wheel.

It really isn't too hard, especially if you're using new stuff.

Thanks Jim and Steve. I will take a look at the book.
Perhaps it will make some good reading over the holidays.

How hard is it to determine the spoke length?  Thanks,

Jim

I like "Spocalc" from the Sheldon Brown site. You can plug actual combos in. I have not used it for an all-new build, but it seems to match what I come up with.

Chandra, I happened to be browsing on VO's web pages and this guy is awesome.  I think he has some of the best deals out there - his pricing is much more reasonable than a lot of places and everything I've bought has been high quality.  Anyway, he has some great prices on built out wheels, both dyno hubs and internally geared hubs.  http://www.velo-orange.com/rihuandotwhc.html

Thanks, Jim. I will take a look at VO. I also contacted longleafbicycles and got a quote for a Velocity Dyad 36 spoke wheel built on SON dynamo.
