I'm trying to remove a set of Shimano 600 NON-aero brake levers from
my handlebars. On similar levers when you squeeze the brake lever, it
opens the gap at the top of the lever and you can stick an allen
wrench in there and loosen the band that holds the brake to the bars.
When I depress the lever on these brakes, I look in the gap and there
is a nut, not an allen bolt. I don't see any obvious way to unscrew
this nut, There is just no room. Does anybody know the trick to this?
I'll keep studying it.

My ancient levers all have a flat head screw in there.

Maybe peel off the hood to see if you get a better view?

I had a set of levers like this once, but it was a long time ago, and I don't remember the details.

They don't have the hoods on them. This is really strange. I've given up for the day. I'm going to do some research and try again tomorrow.

Shine a strong light in there when you get back to it. Dia Compe, Schwinn, and Weinmann all have flat head screws. Mafac has a hex nut you undo with a nut driver once the brake cable is removed. Not even room for a nut driver or a 1/4 drive socket on an extension?

No shimano brake stuff here that predates STI.

Are you sure there isn't a recess to accept an allan wrench?  I thought the same thing on my Shimano levers (1986).  Nut when I shone a light in there, sure enough, there was a place to stick in an allan wrench.

If it is a hex-head, it's probably an 8mm, so a nut driver would work.

Good Luck!

Myles, by the way, what kind of 40-hole rear hub do you have?  And is it 126mm?

Check the Shimano site for exploded view drawings?
