I agree with Leo that a 40mph speed limit on quiet lanes would give totally the wrong impression as to what is an expected and appropriate speed limit for these lanes and would be worse than the current default speed of 60mph which requires no signage. It's  more important that any signage indicates the need for courtesey and respect for non-motorised users (as indeed should be the case on any road!)

Does anyone know what will happen to NCN in Suffolk now Sustrans has indicated it will not support the NCN on roads open to motorised traffic?

The revised NCN network in Suffolk can be viewed on the OS Maps site, if you have a subscription.  As far as I can see some quite significant sections have been reclassified as being suitable for people with Bikeability Level 3 (or equivalent) - i.e. experienced and confident cyclists, or dropped from the network altogether.  These appear to include:

  • NCN 48 from Harfield, through Hadleigh and as far as Whitton (reclassified) and from Whitton to Martlesham (dropped)
  • NCN1 from Copdock to Stoke Park (reclassified)
  • NCN 51 along Felixtowe seafront (reclassified)
  • NCN 51/42 Bawdsey quay to Leiston Abbey (reclassified)
  • NCN 42 Woodbridge to Campsea Ashe (dropped)
  • NCN 42 Campsea Ashe to Snape (reclassified)
  • NCN 41 Snape to the A12 (reclassified).
Thanks,

Leo

Thanks for this Leo, I'll check out the maps on Sustrans website.   I can understand why Sustrans is doing this :to encourage newcomers to cycling it's really important that promoted routes are safe (It would be even better if they were well surfaced and dedicated solely for cycling!). Sadly many dedicated paths around Ipswich seem to get very little maintenance in terms of cutting back overgrowing vegetation - I recently used the bridleway from Norwich Road (Whitton) through to the Anglia Retail Park - the end near the superstores is very overgrown.

Funny you should mention that (the Whitton Lane path). I reported it to Suff Highways a few weeks back and copied to Paul Horne, who I think has added it to his list, so I am hoping it will be sorted. It's a really handy cut-through.
