Hi, I’d really like to get support for a campaign to make Chantry Park
a cycle route – I have a 1hr20 bike ride from a village on the
outskirts of Ipswich & having this as a cut through seems only
sensible. I noticed however with shock that the signs say no cycling,
I don’t know if this just means the grass, as I can’t see why cyclists
can’t, for instance go through the peacemile route [which has no blind
corners, a large enough track for cyclists and pedestrians and of
which the majority of the route is driveable by cars and I should
imagine is classed as a road]. However, this route would need
improvement, I don’t own a mountain bike [nor do I wish to as I have
shoulder injury that makes it a necessity to have a sit up and beg
bike which wouldn't be able to handle the very bad potholes on the
road and the terrible rocks [I can't call it gravel] that they’ve used
on the peacemile]. I think that it would make much more sense for the
council [who runs the park] to create a tarmarc’d route all the way
through, or atleast to cover the worst areas] just as they have done
on the alternative straight route which runs parallel to the house
itself and has a gated entrance. I can send more info and maps which
highlight the route I mention. I know that funds are tight for
councils at the moment, but I’m hoping with a group such as
yourselves, we could help to convince them that cycling really is the
way forward for the health of the local population & the environment
[and people's pockets with the rise in fuel costs], if Ipswich could
become a truly bike friendly town it could bring a lot of publicity,
tourists and well being – think Copenhagen…
I have a few other bugbears along my route too which I’d like to
mention & which would improve the route no end.
Let me know your thoughts,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for joining Cycle Ipswich.
You raise a really good issue.
I am not entirely familiar with this route only having ridden it a couple of times.
I am sure someone on here will know your problem. Can you send a map and more details.
There is a good map showing all the current cycle routes at http://www.openstreetmap.org/. If you load that page and then keep left clicking on the map until you zoom right in to Ipswich you can see a few routes going through Chantry Park.
Also I am compiling a google map which has lots of peoples concerns about roads , junctions, cycle facilities etc in Ipswich and local area marked on it to present to the the quarterly Ipswich Sustainable Transport Panel which Cycle Ipswich has a place on along with Sustrans and the CTC Right to Ride officer.
So I guess that a route which joins up existing routes or enables a short cut for cyclists would be worth putting forward.
Best wishes,
Kevin.

..it seems on further research they have a cyclo cross event in
Chantry Park http://ip-cross.co.uk/cx/ which seems to rely on various
terrain and I can see pictures of cyclists on exactly the piece of the
park I mention… So i doubt they’d make this better and more passable
seeing as they’re having a new event after the olympics… but it makes
me even more confused as to why cyclists aren’t normally allowed
through the park as long as they stick to the paths/ tracks and ride
with care. I am confused… perhaps you can cycle through the park, but
then why does it say no cycling on the signs? There seem to be a lot
of other cycling events there too: http://www.goskyride.com/Search/Details?eventid=5428.
Any light you can shed on this much appreciated. Have contact council
to find out who’s in change of cycle routes too.

mmm yes its all very confusing, as with Holywells and Christchurch Park which have in recent years allowed cycling on certain paths, you wont be able to cycle through unless you can get the Freinds of Chantry Park on board.
I will ask a couple of people at the council about the best course of action.
Can you be more specific about the route across the park which you would like to take ?
Which gates would you enter and leave by ?

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for your message, I will certainly add on the other parts of
the journey that could do with work to you google maps if this can
make your case more complete?
I'd really like to get something done about this.
I have emailed over a pic of chantry park map and will try to figure
out how to attach it to this group discussion

Yes, the plan is to produce a map with as many desired links, problem junctions, downright dangerous bits of road and other bits on for the area.
I am afraid I dont have the tech know how to get you to add the points - please describe them and I will probably know where you are talking about.
Thanks
kevin

OK thanks Kevin, will add them to my own map later and hopefully you can add them to yours,
Cheers

Hi

I have just seen the messages about cycling through Chantry Park. I have over a number of years (15 or more) cycled through the park from the Hadleigh Road entrance, turning right past the stables and along the track that goes up hill to the Cricket Pavillion and thence to the vehicle exit onto the London Road which links with the London Road cycle path. When my children were small we used to use the same route in reverse to reach the play area.  I have seen other cyclists using the same route. I agree that the recent 'repairs' to the track up the hill are very rocky and most unpleasant to cycle on!

With some improvements it would make a very good cycle path.

Thanks Sandra. We are waiting for a reply from the borough council to my email asking exactly what the status cycling has in the park.
As soon as I receive a response we can decide what needs to be done.
Best wishes
Kevin
