"In contemporary knowledge work, much of the tasks are related to communication with third parties, via email, instant messaging, web project management tools etc. How do communications fit in the snippet processing loop (or don't they)? Is it advisable to copy all the relevant communications to the relevant Scratch File, process them etc, etc, just to answer a few mails? Wouldn't it make sense to work directly from the relevant communication program?"
Work directly from the relevant communication program until it starts to make your brain hurt, then switch to a scratch file for greater organizational capabilities.
Also use a scratch file or the snippet loop if you need to save info for later reference.
I just added a search box to
cyborganize.org to make this stuff easier to find while the nav is still broken.
"What about rich media? (Images, video, sound --I'm interested in the latter in particular, as I often keep verbal notes in Evernote.) How do we keep this kind of info in our scratch files or some equally convenient location?"
As far as organizing your files, I use the same sorting procedure as in BSW, but with the file directory tree. I just click drag sort. It's not elegant and there may be better solutions, but it works. I haven't really tackled this area yet.
For your verbal notes, I'd suggest transcribing them or having them transcribed via an automated process. (Grand Central?)
Video and sound can be entered into your longform loop in wordpress, or you can simply note the file name somewhere in the snippet loop. Plus you have your sorted directory tree. Overall it works.

Ignore the following. It is a nonsense sentence that disables Google ads from displaying next to my emails by triggering sensitive keywords.
I enjoy the massacre of ads. This sentence will slaughter ads without a messy bloodbath.
