  • Fallon: Update on talk with Jenny and Diana about Women of color media alert, AMC, Incite

Backstory: COnversation around Be Bold Be Red family court case, shows complexity of advocating in multiple ways.  Limits of being able to help.  Thinking more about the Media Alert System to respond to violence against Women Color.  An online media alert system that really is accountable to the intersectional nature of gendered violence against people of color.  Frustration and anxiety.  Email (sent from the ancestors) from Jenny...let's connect, following up in a convo from back in August.  How do you move people? What moves them? A truly synchronistic moment.  Met last Friday for 2 1/2 hour about how an alert system would look.

Fallon will send sketch, that talks about different audiences with different levels of fluency around an intersectional context.
1. Propose a panel with Andy Smith, Dani from Color of Change, and people using chatrooms to talk about violence. Panel discussion about what moves people and actually developing an alert system at the Allied Media Conference.

2.  important for INCITE folks to be plugged into the workshop to talk about possible collaborations on the website etc.
Comments:
Deepali: call from someone at the Baltimore NAACP, concerned because the NAACP is trying to have a conversation about violence in Black communities, he is concerned because it is being discussed from a policing and prison standpoint instead of a social justice standpoint.  Suggested Andrea Ritchie.  They are interested having either a panel conversation or a speaking engagement at one of their larger meetings.

Other suggestions:

Kai Barrow (critical resistance)
Deborah Small (break the chains)
Nia Wilson (SpiritHouse)
Andrea Ritchie (INCITE)

Fallon: Talking about a specific example about framing that happens for women of color that you don't have to do for men. Reading this as a request for concrete steps towards the alert.

  • Regroup Talk about April Workshop: Capacity, Two months left, solidify location (please add additional suggestions)
    • Fallon's Suggestion: Perhaps host the cyberquilting workshop on one day instead of three days and spend the rest of the weekend in retreat mode include meeting with Incite.
    •  I thought it would be a good idea to host the workshop for a day and a half. One day is never enough. Plus, it gives people time to process and think about what they learned/experienced the day before. There's a bigger opening when we have a chance to reconvene with the same people the next day (Adele).
    • Moya's: MOrning ge to know you
    • breakfast community building
    • afternoon what we need
    • next morning one specific skill and working through that with each organization
    • closing before lunch
    • Deepali: who is the audience ?
    • Adele: can a question be added to the survey about what days work for people
    • Proposal:  retreat Thursday night-ALL Day Friday.  Cyberquilting Workshop All day Saturday, Sunday Morning. Debrief on Sunday evening.

  • Location for Workshop: Kelly said we can use lower level in the Jane Adams Hull House, but I would not recommend doing so. I agree. I'll be in Chicago this weekend meeting with people who may have ideas for other locations (Adele).
  • Adele will talk with folks this weekend
  • Fallon will talk with Beth and Cathy
  • Moya send an email to Barbara about space at UIC

  • Pick a date for organization meeting. My suggestion: last week of February (Adele). Monday 22 February evening. after 7:30

  • Revise the calendar-Moya (adding everyone)adding Deepali to google groups
  • Budget-Fallon and Adele

Hey loves,
Wanted to make it clear what some of the action items were from yesterdays call (sorry that my notes didn't so much do that!)
*Folks who weren't on the call please let us know
a. would you like to be skyped in the meeting in Chicago that Fallon is hosting to introduce the organizations who will be participating in the April workshop to cyberqilting
the meeting is Feb 22. 7:30 CST
b. can you/are you interested in coming to the workshop and retreat from the evening of Thursday April 8- Sunday April 11th?
c. we are looking for another space in Chicago to use for the workshop and another space for the retreat. As detailed below, Adele, Fallon and Moya are each following up with contacts in the CHI but if you have contacts...please pass them on or look for the email that Fallon will be resending about the space needs for the workshop

*FOR FOLKS WHO WERE ON THE CALL and FOLKS WHO WEREN'T: Another item is to suggest speakers/panelists for Deepali's contact at the Baltimore NAACP who can talk about responding to violence in Black communities from a social justice/ PIC abolitionist/intersectional analysis  perspective. Everyone's expertise is appreciated.
Deepali is there a particular time period in which you were planning to get back to the person?

(From Notes) Deepali: call from someone at the Baltimore NAACP, concerned because the NAACP is trying to have a conversation about violence in Black communities, he is concerned because it is being discussed from a policing and prison standpoint instead of a social justice standpoint.  Suggested Andrea Ritchie (INCITE).  They are interested having either a panel conversation or a speaking engagement at one of their larger meetings.

Other suggestions:
Kai Barrow (critical resistance)
Deborah Small (break the chains)
Nia Wilson (SpiritHouse)
ADD MORE!

love,
