Lex,

This is such a beautiful, my-heart-is-so-full letter! Thank you so much for this affirming support.

I formatted the letter, made a make-shift logo and included two small additions (highlighted in yellow). Would you all mind reading it and making sure you feel comfortable with this being submitted and checking for any edits that need to be made?

Love to the quilters!

Adele

Alright y'all,
Here is a first go:  Do we have "institutional letterhead?

To whom it may concern at AWID:

This is a letter of exuberant support and affirmation for the work of Adele Nieves and her loving and transformative approach to human rights and social justice for women of color, trans and gender queer people of color and all people, from the core collective of the Cyberquilting Experiment.   Adele is a leader within our project and a member of the core collective and has taken on a myriad of responsbilities including strategic planning, workshop preparation, outreach, fundraising, serving as a liason between our core group and other social justice organizations, facilitating meetings, creating messaging, (ARE THERE OTHER TASKS I AM MISSING?).  Above and beyond all of this (which is huge), Adele also sustains and motivates the work of the entire collective because of her radical love, her grace at honoring and affirming everyone, her clear and sincere communication and her diligence at following and honoring her own spirit.   So while Adele leads through her administrative, strategic and visionary tasks, what makes her a force in the universe and a perfect candidate for the Human Rights Advocates Program is her ability to manifest her vision of community and transformation on every level, from small meetings to the long-term vision of the organization.
We are supporting Adele's application for the program specifically to support her work on the components of the Cyberquilting Project that center on ending gendered violence against people of color and transitioning our organization from a dedicated core committee to a sustainable organization with the capacity to have a major impact on communities of color.   We anticipate that by participating in the HRAP program Adele will gain specific skills that increase our ability to spread the word about our work, translate our concept into the many communities and contexts in which it is needed, grow our organizational leadership (MORE THINGS? Feel free to add Adele!)  We know that by investing in Adele's growth as a leader we are investing in our own communities and in a powerful vision of the world we deserve.
While Adele participates in the Human Rights Advocates Program we will each take on more of the tasks that she would have otherwise done, but we know that when she returns from her experience we will be ready to transition into a more impactful, sustained organization ready to support women of color led movements to end gendered violence and create creative, economic, racial and social justice in amplifying and connecting their movement work.   We look forward to being a strong example of what women can do when we are connected to each other with vision and purpose.

With hope and gratitude,

Hey Loves,

I'm applying for The Human Rights Advocates Program, it's an AWID program (details below);  I have included The Cyberquilting Experiment as my main organization. They need a letter of support written by the collective/my supervisor. Would all of you be open to writing something for me? I know this is a busy time, but please, please, please :).

I would need it by December 28, so I can complete my application by the 30th. It's due on the 31st, but I'd like to get it in just a bit earlier (just in case I have technical problems).

Also, the interim update is due to AWID for the Seed Grant on the 31st. I will be working on that the 22nd and 23rd.

Giant, warm hugs and sunlight,

Adele

Letter of support details:

The Program is designed for individuals who are committed to return to their organizations immediately after the four-month training period in order to implement their newly acquired skills. To be considered for HRAP, all applicants must currently be working for a non-governmental organization that protects or promotes right(s). Full-time students or government officials will not be considered. Organizations may only support one applicant per year. Multiple applications from a single organization are not considered favorably.

The Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP). New York, NY, USA.

Closing date: December 31, 2009.

2010 HRAP Overview:

The Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) is a capacity building program designed to strengthen the skills, knowledge, and networks of proven human rights defenders from the Global South and marginalized communities in the United States.

The Program provides advanced training, support, and networking opportunities to respected human rights leaders. The focus is both on strengthening the skills of the individual Advocates and providing tools for them to build sustainable organizations that advocate for disadvantaged peoples.

Program Focus:

The four-month intensive capacity building program based at Columbia University in New York focuses on the following key issue areas:

  • Environmental injustice
  • Labor rights violations
  • Ramifications of resource extraction
  • Public health crises
  • Unsustainable development
  • Intolerance, xenophobia, and social exclusion

Special attention is given to the above issues and their intersection with gender, race, ethnicity, sexual identity, and/or other sources of marginalization.

Strategy:

To meet HRAP's goals, Advocates are expected to participate fully in the offerings provided by HRAP, including:

  • Skills workshops on advocacy tools, fundraising, press and media relations, and building sustainable organizations;
  • Columbia University courses on human rights, public health, the environment, sociology, political science, social work, development, and labor rights;
  • Meetings and networking opportunities with NGO staff, activists, policymakers, representatives of international institutions, and academics.

Timing and Commitment:

The 2010 HRAP will begin in the latter half of August and run until mid-December 2010. To be considered, participants must commit to full preparation for and complete engagement in the Program.

About the Center for the Study of Human Rights:

Since its establishment at Columbia University in 1978, the Center for the Study of Human Rights (CSHR) has been committed to its core goals of providing human rights education to Columbia students, fostering innovative interdisciplinary academic research, and offering its expertise in international capacity building to human rights leaders and organizations.

CSHR actively works to ensure that local peoples and human rights advocates are included in the political and economic policy decisions that affect their lives.

By convening faculty, students, and human rights leaders from a wide variety of backgrounds, CSHR creates an environment in which research, education, and international outreach contribute to the establishment of a more just and equitable world.

Admissions Information:

Selection of Participants:

The Program is designed for lawyers, journalists, doctors, teachers, social workers, community organizers, and other human rights activists working with NGOs on issues including labor rights, migration, health, social exclusion, environmental justice, and corporate social accountability.

Participants are selected on the basis of their previous work experience in human rights, commitment to the human rights field, and demonstrated ability to pursue graduate-level studies. Full-time students or government officials will not be considered.

Advocates must originate from and reside in either the Global South or the United States. Fluency in English is required. Preference is given to those who have not previously had opportunities to travel and study internationally.

Advocates must secure institutional endorsement from their organizations for their participation in the Program and must commit to returning to that organization upon completion of the Program.

Funding:

CSHR makes every effort to provide full fellowships to cover program costs as well as travel and housing. A reasonable stipend is also provided to cover basic costs. CSHR staff will work with interested candidates who have been waitlisted for the Program to identify potential funding sources in cases where CSHR has not secured the resources to provide a full fellowship.

To Apply:

Completed applications are due by Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 5pm EST (New York time). The completed application must be submitted online by the deadline. Applicants should take into consideration technical issues and begin the process in advance of the deadline. The online application system will automatically close as of this deadline.

AWID SEED GRANTS

Hello friends,

Greetings from AWID! I do hope this email finds you well and busy with your seed grant projects. We've been thrilled to receive a few updates on your activities and are really proud of the great work you are doing.
I know it has been a while since we've been in touch, and so I just wanted to give you an update about the reporting requirements and deadlines over the next 8 months. Please mark these dates in your calendars!

1) The Interim Update - due by December 31, 2009

There are no specific reporting guidelines for this report.  We would just appreciate receiving an update on where your project is in terms of completion, a description of activities carried out to-date and any accompanying photos you may have.  This update can be as in-depth as you wish, but please aim to send us something 1-3 pages in length.

2) Final date to complete projects - May 1, 2010

3) The Final Narrative and Financial Report - due August 1, 2010.

We are much slower than initially expected in terms of finalizing the guidelines for you and apologize for the delay. However, we expect to send you the guidelines by the beginning of January 2010 which still gives you 7 months to prepare your final report.

The Narrative report will require you to respond to a series of questions about the activities, goals and impacts of your project as well as offer AWID some feedback on the Seed grant application process and follow-up.
The Financial report will require you to include details about your budgeted vs. actual project expenses.

If your project focused on the creation of digital stories, documents, photographs, videos, etc, please share a copy of those outputs with us.

Please note: We encourage all seed grant recipients whose projects are complete before March 15th, 2010 to submit your final report to us by the first week of April, 2010.

Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to be in touch.

Best wishes,

Jessica
