Adrian Wood: Brymedia boss is back this time for NITEL

Former CEO of MTN Nigeria, Adrian Wood, has since his exit from the leading mobile phone company maintained a relatively lower profile.

In between that, he had a stint as CEO of Daily Times and is currently Chairman, HiTV, the fast-growing indigenous company battling South Africa’s Multichoice for the vibrant local cable TV market.

But Wood is back on familiar terrain when he led Bymedia, the consortium whose $551m bid for the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), the pioneer national operator, placed its offer number three behind those of preferred bidder, New Generation that staked a winning $2.5b and reserve bidder, Omen International that is second with $956m.

Government has put the sale on hold and ordered a probe into the transaction that may lead to a review of the deal in the wake of allegations that some bid rules were breached. The outcome of the probe is yet to be made public by government, a development that has put the process on hold.

Despite emerging number three with its offer for 75% stake in NITEL, Wood reckons that Brymedia Consortium with backing from its technical partner, Telecom New Zealand (TNZ), have plans to reverse the fortune of Nigeria’s ailing national operator.

Wood, alongside Managing Director, Europe, Asia and African Operations of TNZ, Nick Batchelor, offer a peek into the Brymedia plans and why they want government to reconsider their offer in an interview with Shina Badaru

NITDA: Straddling the line between performance and culpability

Lagos. November 27, 2010. An integral and sometimes unhealthy part of our discourse is the incessant carping about the failures and inadequacies of our political and socio-economic system. Whilst there is some merit in such arguments, some rant often offers nothing more than stating the bleeding obvious. While it has become customary to hear about public officials bemoaning the state of our affairs (often met with shrug of indifference), it is a completely different kettle of fish when this whining comes from very highly trained professionals – some of who have got their training at the nation’s expense and, sometimes, are put in a position of implementing reform – but fail to deliver.  It leaves us in a state of apoplexy but it is particularly galling when those who have the opportunity to change the system churn out the same old tired reasons of claiming ‘lack of funding’ or ‘lack of political will’ as reasons for poor performance. http://www.technologytimesng.com/2010/11/28/straddling-the-line-between-performance-and-culpability/
