New Delhi • Cyber cell of the Delhi Police witnessed a sharp 255 per cent increase in the number of complaints related to cyber crimes last year, an official report said.

The cell, which is currently placed under the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police, received 206 complaints last year against 58 in 2005.

The cell was constituted in 2000 to fight the rising menace of cyber-related crimes. A total of 17 cases related to hacking, obscenity, e-commerce fraud (online share trading, credit card fraud), Internet-related (copyright violation and misrepresentation on the Internet) crimes were registered last year.

This was against 12 cases registered in 2005, indicating a 42 per cent rise.

"Though we have got all the facilities to check the menace, it is very difficult to put a control on it as the investigation process takes a lot of time." According to the report, police identified 14 types of modus operandi used by the offenders last year, a 100 per cent jump in the complexities as only seven were identified in 2005.

"To combat cyber crimes, we need to train cops at the level of constables and it should be made an integral part of police training," an official said. Last month, an airhostess was allegedly defamed when her fake and nude profile was posted on Orkut, a public sharing domain, causing a storm.
