Dear Colleagues,

As you are aware, the Oxford Project has been going on, and we are putting together a new SCI 101 Textbook based on my 1993 Manuscript, but updated to current.  The attached PDF is the design of the cover pages by my students, highlighting "Twelve Pioneering Stars of SCI."  Please have a look and let me know if and only if there is an absolute objection from you, and if yes, please provide your reasons. Otherwise, we will be moving forward to generate the completed eBook soon.

For those of you who feel that our naming of the 12 Stars is less than optimal, don't worry, because the second book accompanying this one is in the making, for 144 names of "Who Is Who in SCI". There, we still have 8 seats for you to elect people. Some of you already have our earlier draft (about 136 names). If you're interested in adding names or even yourself to that book, please contact me.

You are welcome to spread this message to your circle of colleagues of SCI - Systemics, Cybernetics, Informatics.
Best regards, Jason

Hi Jason

11 men, 1 woman. These fields do have a gender balance problem, but you also miss out some obvious people, e.g. Mead, Lovelace, ...

Smutz, Bertalanffy. If giving prominence to them as stars, I hope the book will contextualize this with respect to their relations to apartheid and nazism. I am uncomfortable about uncritical attitudes to either.

Best
Ben

Hi all,

No Gregory Bateson?
No Gregory Bateson, no cybernetics.

Glad the project is going forward, Jason. :-). Surprised there's no Warren McCulloch or Heinz von Foerster. Both played critical roles in the founding of Cybernetics. I'm also an advocate for Gordon Pask, the 'cyberneticians' cybernetician'.
Best wishes, Bernard

Hi Bernard, long time no see! How are you doing? HVF is the third one under Cybernetics. McCulloch had to give that seat to Pitts... to promote the younger one in the pair... The twelve seats there are sure not enough, but our artist doesn't want that page to be too crowded.  All of them, including you, are in the 144-person "Who's Who" anyway. Best - Jason

I've got some age related issues, so don't get much done. I think Warren in many ways was the prime mover for Cybernetics.
All the best, Bernard
