The latest news is the wiring is shot, and maybe next week they'll
have it fixed - maybe, and maybe, next week.
The attendant lifts are still going but Joyce and Demetri knock off
work about 4.30pm, and are flat to the boards. The stairs are often
unpredictable for people too. Oh, they're still there after 80 years,
but
the security doors are often locked and if you're not a tenant, can't
get thru after 4.30pm-ish without a key.
Nobody in the building today at all, normally we're busy
on a Saturday arvo for arts and galleries. But the only people
walking the passage ways are gallery owners seeing if anybody else is
in the
building. It's hot enough just walking down the street in 40C, who'd
want to climb 9 floors of stairs in a building with no air
conditioning? Of course if you don't open there'll be some hardy soul
who'll make the climb and curse you for not being there when you've
advertised you will be.
Like we can predict Melbourne weather anyway :)
Melbourne February Weather Records
Highest Max: 43.2°C in 1983
Lowest Max: 14.7°C in 1951
Average Max: 25.8°C
Highest Min: 30.5°C in 1902
Lowest Min: 4.5°C in 1924
Average Min: 14.5°C
The solution of course is to turn the music up and sit in front of the
fan!!
So what does all this mean? Well, if you arrive at the building after
4,30pm or midday Saturday, you have to climb the stairs - that's
everybody, tenant and customers as well. So for instance with
openings
at one of the 4 art galleries in the building, its a climb up the
stairs. Seeing 3 are on levels 6,7 & 8 that's an effort for most. So
the openings are quiet, which makes the artists who hire the
galleries
understandably upset. For the many dozens of businesses who see
clients after they've finished work at 5pm, (the building usually
closes after 7pm) that means people think twice before coming here.
You also need to hope that the security doors to the stairs are also
open after 4.30pm to actually get in. There's only one open to the
public, and without our knowledge, it can be closed...We can come
down
stairs and open it for you, but you need to phone or email etc etc,
groan...
We have a sneaking suspicion that, the elusive part will not fix the
problem, and it's going to be a real headache. It's not like this is
an unforseen issue, the lift is old, by any standard, and even though
it's lasted longer than most modern lifts - post 1960's, it was bound
to happen.
So... if you're planning on coming to the Nicholas after 4.30pm
weekdays, or midday saturday, perhaps check with this thread to see
if the lifts are working first.
Oh well, maybe tomorrow...lol

He's sorted it, but the automatic (centre Lift) now no longer stops on
the first floor. The attendant lifts still do, but not the centre
ones. The door would jam on that floor.
The whole thing needs to be reconditioned, but the building owner
doesn't want to spend the money, wonder why? Surely it needs to be
done sooner or later and it'll just get more expensive...
Anyhow, operational again...
