"She could have given this money to another project. But just think of the
foresight she had. She must have been a great human being. She wanted to
carry on a legacy of helping the less fortunate, rebuilding the lives of a child
[or] a family through the Salvation Army," Mayor Daley said today.
"This gift will give a gift to generations to come — not only here today, but
hundreds of years" from now.
Two years ago, then Ald. Dorothy Tillman (3rd) rejected the Salvation Army's offer
to build the $109.8 million community center in Bronzeville. She was holding out
for retail development on the site near Robert Taylor homes.
Tillman's loss turned out to be Ald. Carrie Austin's gain. The Ray and Joan Kroc
Corps Community Center is now planned to be built on 33 acres of vacant
industrial land in the 1100 block of West 119th Street. A 200-foot-tall light tower
will serve as the Salvation Army's trademark "beacon of hope" to a downtrodden
community. It will be visible from Interstate 57 less than a mile away.
"I'm blessed that [Tillman] said, `no.' And the Lord said, `Get up and go get it,' "
Austin told reporters at today's design unveiling.

“What Do You Guys Do In Chicago For Fun?”
I recently had a friend visiting from New Jersey, and after we talked about old school friends,
the latest fashions, and why I’m not yet married, she asked a question that made me stop
and think –– “So Bonnie, what do you guys do in Chicago for fun?’
I paused a moment because my friend didn’t want the usual explanation of, “Girl, we go to
the movies, a club, you know, we just hang out.” She wanted specifics of where we go,
what is the draw, and why we choose one place over another.
This upcoming season, you can look forward to these BET productions: I Am Who I Am (The Story of
Teddy Pendergrass). This musical venture helps explain the soul of Teddy Pendergrass. Another BET
production, I Gotcha, depicts the genius of Joe Tex and features his outstanding music.
All In Love Is Fair is a tribute to all the love balladeers, such as Luther Vandross, Ron Isley, the Isley
Brothers, and Teddy Pendergrass. It will make you remember your first love.
To close out their 2008 season, BET presents A Tribute To The Black Crooner, which will celebrate the
lives of Billie Eckstein, Nat King Cole, Roy Hamilton, Chuck Jackson, and Johnny Mathis. Black Ensemble
Theater is located at 4520 S. Beacon Street in Chicago and the phone number is 773/769-4451.
Congo Square Theatre’s productions are exciting and fresh. The ensemble actors are the best Chicago
has to offer and I have enjoyed every play that I have seen by this company. You will love their twist on
the story of the birth of Christ in Black Nativity. You will need to go out for dinner and a drink after seeing
The Talented Tenth, as it will definitely spark discussion. Their season ends with Sanctified, a tribute
to gospel music.
Check out their web site, www.congosquaretheatre.org, for more information.
ETA on Chicago’s South Side is the heartbeat of African-American theater. Their 2007-2008 season is fantastic. This Far By Faith opens February 7, 2008 and is the story of a minister, family commitment, his job, his son,
an R&B artist, and the power of faith. You’ll get a soul-searching examination of marriage from the play
Checkmates, which opens April 17, 2008. Their season closes with Get Ready, about an all-male singing group
from the ‘50s. Visit ETA’s web site at www.etacreativearts.org for more information.
Ballet will be fused with urban street dance, multi-media, fashion, art, improvisation and poetry when Complexions
Contemporary Ballet comes to the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University (ATRU) for two performances only,
Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007 at 2 p.m. Founded by former Alvin Ailey
American Dance Theater dancers Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, Complexions Contemporary Ballet
received The New York Times’ prestigious “Critics Choice” award.
For tickets: Visit the Auditorium Theatre Box Office at 50 E. Congress Parkway, call (312) 902-1500,
or visit www.ticketmaster.com or www.auditoriumtheatre.org.
You don’t have to go to New York to see great plays. Broadway in Chicago brings all the best shows here. It’s great
to have dinner in the Loop and walk over to the Cadillac Theater to see Phantom of the Opera, or to the Ford Theater
to see Wicked.
Their 2008 season includes Jersey Boys at the LaSalle Bank Theater, My Fair Lady at the Cadillac Theater, RENT
(one of my favorite shows) coming to the Cadillac Theater in February, Sweeney Todd, Avenue Q, and the all-time hit,
Dirty Dancing. Visit www.broadwayinchicago.com for more information.
Depending on my mood, I will head over to the Aria Bar and Restaurant in the Fairmont Hotel for some sushi and people
watching. The bar is kind of loud, but festive.
If I want a quieter atmosphere, I stop by Rhapsody at 65 E. Adams. The hors d’oeuvres are fabulous in the lounge area and
the atmosphere is cozy. La Pomme Rouge at 108 W. Kinzie is the place for great atmosphere, good food, and on Tuesday
nights, great soul music.
One of my favorite places to enjoy good food and jazz is Flavor Restaurant in Flossmoor, Illinois. Baaaby, they have the
best creamy grits for breakfast you will ever taste! The dinner menu is wonderful, and on Thursday nights they have live jazz.
It’s a wonderful cozy spot for a date, or to perhaps find one.
One of the best-kept secrets in fine dining is the Alex Steak House at the Empress Casino. The steaks are tender and juicy,
the seafood is fresh and well seasoned, and the atmosphere is classy and intimate. My good friend and casino host, Tony
Harper, reminded me that the Zanzibar club at the Empress is a great place to party. Who knows, after dinner and dancing,
you may get lucky in the casino.
This summer, I loved the intimacy of the Country Club Hills Theater. The artists performing there during the 2007 season were
of the highest caliber, including Smokey Robinson, Ashford and Simpson, Charlie Wilson, Kenny G, the O’Jays, Isaac Hayes,
and the “two Georges” –– George Clinton and George Benson.
It’s a great place to spend a summer evening. The 2008 season begins on June 6, 2008. James Abernathy, Director of Events
for the theater, invites you to visit their web site www.countryclubhills.org, where you can give your suggestions on who you
would like to see perform at the theater.
Jonathan Abernathy, fashion consultant and stylist to the stars listed:
Vice Restaurant and Lounge, 840 W. Randolph. This is a great little restaurant by day and lounge by night. Warm setting
with candles and dark cherry wood. Up and coming nightspot for Yuppie and Buppies.
Room 21 at 2110 S. Wabash has great appetizers and good drinks. It’s a new and happening spot and is often flooded with
that young and happening crowd. To eat and talk, try to get in early, after that it’s all about the scene.
Bijans Bistro at State and Erie is banging and will always be. You may see Scottie Pippin or other celebs having a great time.
The backdrop and intimate setting is wonderful and if you are into red meat try the Bijan Burger. Spectacular!
Pops for Champagne at State and Ohio is a very happening place with a great location. Young urban professionals are
becoming more and more hip to this place.
Whiskey Bar and Grill, 1015 N. Rush, is cool and very funky, urban and masculine. It attracts the upper-echelon of Chicago
and will require a reservation…or possibly knowing the right people.
My Virgo sister, Adrianne Jones, added to the list Close Ups Jazz Bar on Clark at Van Buren. It’s small, cozy, and
always has some of the best jazz artists playing in Chicago. It’s great for after work, a date, or to meet people
who have a love for good music.
She loves Green Dolphin Street, 2200 N. Ashland, for supper, jazz, and the mood.
Her list include Exposure Tapas Restaurant at 13th and Wabash for the food and the affordable price; M Lounge on 16th
and Wabash for the great drinks, and Quatro Restaurant at 20th and Wabash for the food, drinks, and the happening clientele.
Where should you go if you want to dance, dance, dance all night?
The Funky Buddha Lounge has been a hot spot for a long time. It’s a hot, funky, fun place.Sunday nights at Zentra, 923 W. Weed Street, is the place to be. The club is beautiful with its multiple rooms, three dance
floors, and great people.
If you just want to let your hair down and be “free,” head over to Hydrate, 3858 N. Halsted. The music is great, the crowd is
diverse, and you are guaranteed to dance out of your shoes.
Chicago is known for “stepping.” I had to check with my girl Cynthia Bean, editor of “The Stepper’s 411.” Cynthia knows
where everyone goes to “step.” For fun, good drinks, and great music head over to Mr. G’s at 1547 W. 87th Street.
The Majestic Star Casino in Buffington Harbor is a place to go to get your step on, every last Friday of the month.
Get out the calendar and mark in your steppin' dates!
On Tuesday nights, you can head over to the 50 Yard Line on 75th and Michigan Ave. in Chicago. The “Fiddy” has been
home for steppers for a good long while.
Wednesdays is Chicago Legends, 2109 S. Wabash, or you can head over to Some Place Else on 110th and Ashland.
Thursdays and Saturdays, The Dating Game, 8926 S. Stony Island, is the place to be.
Cynthia says that you don’t have to be in the city to get your step on.
In the south suburbs on Wednesday nights, there is Miss Camille’s Variety Club in Joliet, Illinois. Yes, to the steppin' crowd,
Joliet is considered a suburb of Chicago. On Fridays, take your date to Club D’Elegance, 1422 S. Cottage Grove in
Dolton, Illinois, or University Golf Course, 23520 Crawford Ave. in University Park, and Sweet Georgia Browns,
4167 W. 183rd Street, in Country Club Hills.
If you are in the western suburbs on a Monday or Wednesday night, stop into Touch of the Past, 947 Mannheim Road
in Bellwood, and on Thursdays, Mariella’s Banquet Hall, 124 S. 5th Ave., Maywood, Illinois, and/or The Pines Oaks
Leaf Lounge in Forest, Park, Illinois. We step all over the Chicago area!
From theater to dining to jazz to dancing, Chicago is the best city for entertainment. So, to answer my friend’s question,
“What do you guys do in Chicago for fun?” the answer is EVERYTHING!
