Subject: Congressman Rush's Statement on Current Health Status

RUSH STATEMENT ON UPDATED HEALTH STATUS
CONTACT: Rev. Stanley Watkins Chief of Staff (202) 225-4372

“On March 10th, I issued a statement regarding surgery I underwent to remove a cancerous tumor
from my salivary gland.  The surgery was successful and I continue to make progress toward
a full recovery.  As a part of my recovery efforts, I have undergone post-operative treatments since
the beginning of April.  This treatment will conclude mid-June and I expect to return to my full
congressional duties soon thereafter.  I want to thank the many people who have called, written
or sent expressions of concern, encouragement and best wishes, including President and Mrs. Bush,
Gov. and Mrs. Blagojevich, Mayor and Mrs. Daley, my constituents, schoolchildren, clergy, business
leaders, local elected officials, U. S. House and Senate leadership and various members of Congress.
I am truly blessed to receive such an overwhelming outpouring of support.

“Since my surgery, I have been in consistent communications with both my personal and subcommittee
staff as well as various members of Congress.  Under my direction, my very capable staffs continue to
actively manage the business of the people of the First Congressional District.  Speaker Pelosi and
other House leaders are aware of my current status and remain very supportive.

“Finally, last February, the voters of the 1st Congressional District overwhelming renominated me
to serve my 9th term in office.  I am and I remain a candidate for re-election in the November general
election and look forward to serving the people of my district.  Again, I want to publicly thank and
commend my outstanding medical team, led by Dr. Everett Volkes and Dr. Elizabeth Blair, for their
care and service.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers during my season of healing and recovery.”

Subject: Plan Commission OKs Children’s Museum move

Chicago’s Plan Commission on Thursday greenlighted a controversial proposal
to relocate the Chicago Children’s Museum to Grant Park, a move that
opponents fear will allow further private development on public land. After about
9 hours of testimony and debate, at about 10:45 p.m., commission members
voted overwhelmingly in favor of the proposal to build a 100,000-square-foot,
two-story structure below ground in the north end of Grant Park. It would replace
the museum’s current home on Navy Pier.

"Morning Due" From Chicago to the World Renowned Cannes Film Festival!
Help keep Our story and Chicago films on the map of the larger film world!!

"Morning Due" is the little film that Cannes!  The film was written, produced and directed by the Emmy award winning

from the short story called Whipporwill, Sing, written by Oubria Tronshaw, and stars Shane'sia Davis, Javon Johnson,
Sandra Watson & Stephen Spencer. It details one couple's audacity to love in the face of the unlovable. The resources
to make the film materialized from little more than a common belief that this story was one that could not remain untold.

"Morning Due" has already won the Langston Hughes African-American Jury Award for Best Overall Film.  And now,
the film has been accepted in the Festival de Cannes, one of the oldest, most influential and prestigious film festivals in
the world!  Now that we've paved the way for the film, perhaps you can help us humbly follow. Please support our cast
and crew by donating what you Cannes!  Thanks to many of you we already have raised some of the funds to help take
a portion of the production crew to Cannes to promote the film--and future works from Chicago filmmakers!

However, we are still about $5000 short of covering this very expensive trip.  We need your help build on the success
of this film!  We leave on Sunday May 18th.  Please go to our website http://www.myspace.com/morningdue donate
what you can--and remember every bit helps! The website has a PayPal account set up for donations and you can also
look at the trailer and see behind the scenes stills! Read what the award-winning director, Barbara Allen has to say
about the little film, "Morning Due" that just keeps on winning!  Thank you Chicago for your continued support!

The South Chicago Art Center provides after school arts programming
for neighborhood children.  With cuts in funding for arts programming,
this organization helps build a stronger sense of community and is a
wonder place for local youth to tap into their own sense of aesthetics
and explore the possibilities ahead.

The attached invitation is for the Art Center’s fundraiser,
Wednesday, May 21 from 6:00 to 8:30
at the Center for Proliferation of Afro – Asian Artifacts
located at 2003 S. Halsted.

To all –

I would like to extend sincere thanks for making our town hall meeting last Saturday evening possible.

“Speaking Truth: A Town Hall Meeting on Violence” achieved what we hoped.

It raised awareness of the complex factors contributing to the shootings taking place in our neighborhoods.

Without you – the panel and audience – it could not have been possible.

Below is a link to the 2-hour program, divided into topics:

Subject: Reminder:  New Photo Radar In IL

1

Illinois has been using photo radar in freeway work zones since July, 2005.

The State of Illinois uses speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones"
on major freeways.

Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket
for the FIRST offense,
but the SECOND offense will cost
$ 1000.00
and comes with a 90-Day suspension.

                                      2

Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license , which allows
insurance companies to raise their rates.

This represents the harshest penalty structure yet for a city or state using
PHOTO enforcements.  The State will begin with TWO camera vans issuing
tickets in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH.

                                       3

Photographs of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken.

Mon. May 19, 2008-Malcolm X Day

The O.A.A.U. (The Organization of Afro-American Unity) invites the Community
to celebrate the Annual Malcolm X Day and Pilgrimage to the resting place of
Malcolm X on Monday, May 19, 2008. This year will be El Hajj Malik El Shabazz's
(Malcolm X) 83nd Birthday anniversary and the 42nd year of pilgrimage since our
fallen leader's assassination. The Pilgrimage will be led by Bro. Rodnell Collins, the
nephew of Malcolm X and President of the O.A.A.U.

Buses and Cars will assemble at the Harlem State Office Building on 125th Street
and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd at 9:00 am and proceed to Ferncliff Cementary in
Hartsdale, NY at 10:00 am. There will be the traditional Ceremony that will last
approximately one hour and will return to Harlem to take part in several activities and
rallies sponsored by many organizations throughout the day.

The O.A.A.U. initiated the pilgrimage in 1965, after the burial of Malcolm X, to
honor and show respect for our people's fallen leader as well as to educate future
generations about the legacy of Malcolm X and his effort to liberate African People's
minds and bodies. The ceremony was designed by Sister Ella Collins, the sister of
Malcolm X and then President of the O.A.A.U., and was led by her until Prof. James
Small was appointed as the Vice President of the O.A.A.U. and the Coordinator of
the May 19 - Malcolm X Celebration.

We ask pilgrims to dress appropriately for the weather, bring liquids and a light
snack, pay close attention to the children and elderly that are coming, respect the
cemetery grounds and follow proper road rules.

We wish to thank all organizations for their support and involvement in the pilgrimage
and events following including but not limited to the First World Alliance, and
the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee.

New IRS-related scam

With the news full of stories about the economic stimulus checks starting to go out to some taxpayers, phishers have seized the opportunity to come up with a new scam.

People are seeing emails directing you to go to a web site and fill out a form in order to claim your "rebate." The web site is designed to look like an IRS site but examination of the URL/IP address indicates it's based in Korea. The form asks for your bank routing number and checking account number so the money can be directly deposited into your account.

That should be a red flag but some folks will undoubtedly fall for it.

In reality, the only thing you have to fill out to get the stimulus payment (if you qualify, I.e., don't make "too much" money) is file a 2007 tax return.

Read more about the scam here:

Desmond Tutu: Equality of U.S. blacks an 'illusion'

By Storer H. Rowley
Source:  Chicago
Tribune
South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu weighed in on the presidential campaign Tuesday in Chicago,
praising America's ability to produce the first viable African-American presidential candidate while
describing the nation as haunted by a racial divide that still offers blacks what he called only
"the illusion of equality."

"You are a crazy country," Tutu, 76, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, said in an interview with
the Tribune. "You're a country that has I think some of the most generous people I've ever come
across in the world."

But he chided Americans for getting "very, very upset" with the pastor of Sen. Barack Obama, noting
that Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. "may have said more crudely what, actually, almost every African-American
would have wanted to say. I mean that is how they feel in your country, that race ... is a very, very real issue."

"And I think on the whole you keep trying to pretend it isn't," he added, noting the issue will haunt Americans
until there is a way to talk honestly about race, such as holding a reconciliation forum.

Tutu, who headed South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission probing human-rights abuses under
apartheid, was here to receive the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation's Lincoln Leadership
Prize, presented by Oprah Winfrey.

Unlike in South Africa's apartheid era, he said, where blacks were treated as "nothing," in America,
"You say to them, 'You're equal, and the sky's the limit.' And they keep bumping their heads against
this thing that's stopping them from reaching out to the stars."
