The sending fax machine will need to change the "compatibility" mode and "error correction" to off and set the "transmission speed" to 9600 bauds. Most machines would be set to 14400 and this will cause more than usual amount of errors on digital lines. I can call Linda in the morning to help with that.

Instructions to change  "compatibility" setting to "basic":

1. Pressing "Menu/Set
2. Pressing numbers, "2", "0", and "1"
3. Select "basic" with the up/down arrow control
4. Press "Menu/Set" again

ECM Menu instructions:

1. Press and hold the "Menu" button on the front of the Brother fax machine to open the main menu.

2. Type "2864" to put the fax machine into maintenance mode. Type "10" to gain access to the firmware panel.

3. Type "22" to open the WSW22 menu. Type "1" twice to turn off the ECM function on outgoing fax messages. Press "9" to return to the main WSW22 menu.

4. Type "2" and then type "1" to disable ECM on incoming fax messages. Type "99" to save your changes and exit to the main menu.

Faxing over VoIP with Brother Fax Machines.

Faxing with Brother Fax machines over VoIP should be accomplished using the following settings.  Set the Baud rate to 9600 for a slower speed by choosing Basic as the Configuration Setting.  And turn off or disable ECM (Error Correction Mode) by enabling Overseas Mode.  These settings can be difficult to make on some older Brother fax machines, but have become easy on many new models.  Brother has realized that VoIP is here to stay and instead of deflecting support for faxing by saying that they didn't support faxing over IP they now have started to have configuration settings that will allow these fundamental basic settings.
