Hey All,
OTAs started this week, which seems like a good milestone to get the CWO 2023 draft on the calendar. With vacations plans around the league in August it's already looking pretty tight, and Sept 6 is looking like the best option right now, with Sept 4, which is labor day, as another possible, but less desirable option. The NFL season starts on Sept 7. Any objections to setting the draft date for the 6th? I'd like get the draft rolling at 6 pm that evening. If we need to do the 4th it would also be an evening draft.

We're still looking at doing an offline draft, but may do something different than the Google doc this year. Options are being explored.

Buy-in will not change from last year. Rule changes are open for discussion. A few of us started using discord in a dynasty league we're in and thought we'd give it a try for CWO. You should be able to join here: https://discord.gg/gWKQfn6q.

Looking forward to another great fantasy season.

Sincerely,
Your League Champion

Thanks for the kickoff, Champ!

I’m good with the 6th and a 6pm start time. Could we also explore timed picks?  Things ran way too long last year.

Matt

Looking at using a 3rd party site that will let us have longer picks early for a little socializing and trading but also tighten it up after a few rounds

The CWO draft is always a grind, but we're looking at some offline draft options that allow us to set a timer but offer the flexibility we want. It may result in a few extra bucks on the buy in, tbd. I'm dead set against using ESPN's online draft tool.

I should be good for the 6th. Probably the 4th as well if need be.

The 6th @ 6 works for me.

I'm good with 9/6 at 6:00 PM. I really want to find a solution to the untimed picks.  I will pay for any 3rd party site. While I don't hate ESPN as much as Logan, I agree that it's not ideal for drafting.  I know that the social aspect is important, especially because we don't get to see each other often, but if we can find a middle ground that would be great.

Thanks for organizing Logan!

9/6 works, I may have to start the draft from the car as I'll be commuting home from DC but shouldnt be an issue.

9/6 should work for me. A little far out to say 100% but don't see any issues right now.

So re. platform and timer: I started writing a rant earlier in the week, but I wanted to add some data to it, and then I'm not sure that the data supported my rant (but also didn't rule it out).

I'm fine with whatever system we want to use and including timed picks, but I'm not entirely sure that's going to address the real problem if we're trying to cut down how long the draft takes. I feel like there is definitely the occasional distracted drafter and occasional over-thinking of a pick that a timer would maybe help with, but I subjectively feel like the bigger problem is when we have someone drafting remotely while doing something else -- having to call in their picks & having to catch up every time. And I'm not trying to call anyone out specifically because it's been multiple different people different years and they have all been for totally fair reasons.

So initial subjective rant over, here's some data I grabbed off the draft board. Like I said, I didn't want to target anyone in particular plus it's kind of a pain in the ass to collect, so I only did round-by-round times, not times for each pick.

(Round 3's first pick was 6:16 - so we also didn't actually start "on time")
RoundFirst pickLast PickLength
46:176:360:19
56:386:510:13
66:517:010:10
77:017:150:14
87:167:300:14
97:317:430:12
107:437:590:16
118:008:200:20
128:208:360:16
138:368:530:17
148:549:120:18
159:129:210:09
169:229:320:10
179:329:410:09
189:419:500:09
199:519:590:08

So objectively the later rounds are the fastest. The first round and late-middle rounds are the slowest. I'm not really sure what to make of all of that. Mid rounds is when the performance "enhancing" drugs are kicking in? Maybe they are just the hardest to draft?

Getting back to the original point of my rant: if we think it takes too long, that's a fair complaint because it's definitely a marathon. If we want to put timers in, we need to have a specific plan on what happens when you exceed it  -- auto pick (if so, who/what picks)? Forfeit pick? Next person is up and you can jump back in on your pick whenever you get your shit together? Do you get any mulligans and if so how many and for how long? Do we want a defined mid-draft break? -- otherwise leaving it up to figuring in the moment won't actually save any time. I still subjectively think that presence is part of the problem, but if there are hard and fast rules the people will be more willing to more firmly set their schedule / say no to draft times that don't really work / find an alternate draft plan.

I'm fine with any plan as long as it's a well-defined one, not a "we're going to have a timer but then pause 3 times a round" one. Or I'm fine going for 4 hours since it's just once a year ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Final point: I'd also totally be down to rethinking the starters / bench situation to drop a round or two off the draft. Like, I'm kind of over 2 QB but mostly because I suck at picking QBs; that's one round saved right there!

Meant to reply to this sooner...All valid points, and you're a total nerd, so thanks for giving us some hard numbers to look at.
It's just been really hard to find a time for this draft, especially now that there are several parents in the group and we're spread out, so I'm all for the flexibility (at least we're all in the same timezone now). It also has never particularly bothered me that it takes a long time, I've just heard that complaint from others. However this year I have another draft starting from 8pm-ish, so will definitely hope we're past the meatier rounds at that point and will basically be "autodrafting" from FBG Draft dominator once i'm doing 2 at once.

I hear a couple of points that we should decide on ahead of the draft.

1. 2QB, SF, 1QB setup?
1QB has become pretty lame because the variance in QBs is pretty low, but will go with the majority. I've grown to really like SuperFlex and that's the way a lot of the sites are moving towards which increases QB value but doesn't make it as crazy as our 2QB setup.
2. Draft Clock Penalty
Definitely need some sort of teeth. I'm not sure what other than NFL style makes sense where your pick is skipped and the next person can basically cut you in line. Not sure if this site we're looking at supports that though. And if it is an autopick, does the site support that?
3. Allow for mulligans
Definitely would think 1 mulligan at least, maybe 2 in year 1.
4. Bench size/fewer draft rounds.
I think the bench size is good but woudln't mind just not drafting those last few rounds and have those be decided during waivers. We're starting the day before the season so it's not like some secret tip I read on aug 4 is going to make a huge difference in the last 2-3 rounds of the draft.

Rule Changes
QB Format = Superflex
Zo told me he is down for Superflex, but is too lazy to get in discord. That gives SF 6 votes with Logan and the Butt Pirates abstaining.

Didn't seem to be any follow up any of my kicker suggestions so we'll just leave those as is.

Zo told me he wanted to keep Gordon and Henderson because he was sure they'd get playing time again once injuries hit, and he's really high on Bass being the #1 kicker this year. I'll go ahead and lock those in for him.
