Businesses can apply now for green awards
Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013
By Mark Glover
The California Air Resources Board is accepting applications through Nov. 1 for its fourth CoolCalifornia Small Business Awards Program.
The awards recognize small firms that integrate positive environmental practices and sustainability into their business practices, including reducing energy use, water conservation and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.
Small businesses can get more information and apply online at www.coolcalifornia.org.  Winners will be announced in January and recognized in February in a public ceremony in Sacramento.

Award Categories are:
CoolCalifornia Small Business of the Year Award: Awarded to California small businesses that have demonstrated measurable reductions in their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and documented the costs and benefits of their actions by using tools such as the CoolCalifornia carbon calculator. Examples include energy savings and/or cost savings (documented by utility bills), investments in clean/renewable energy (and calculated return on investment), major process/operational improvements, and the purchase of environmentally preferable products such as electric/hybrid vehicles (fuel savings, GHG emission reduction, etc.).
CoolCalifornia Climate Leader Award: Awarded to California small businesses that were proactive in reducing their environmental impacts. Climate Leaders will have described the specific actions taken to achieve the reductions in greenhouse gas emissions (changed lighting; implemented recycling programs; purchased environmentally preferable products; increased weatherization; educated employees, customers, or the public) but may not be able to quantify the majority of their GHG reductions or cost savings.
