Thanks to Ben Pageler and UC Merced for a well-planned, well-executed and well-fed Central Valley Philosophy Association gathering on Saturday.
The range of presentations challenged our ideas about the Academy, Justin Pack at CSU Stanislaus, as well as our ability to have a symbolic conversation. I didn't realize that modus ponens could be such a problem and that Fitch's paradox could be better considered by adjusting assumptions as argued by philosophers' from UC Davis, including Tyrus Fisher and Liz Rard (now at Reedley College.) Steve Gamboa, CSU Bakersfield, invited us to get into the extended mind of a Google car, while leaving the Tesla behind momentarily. (Did anyone previously know about the "Cult of Mac" blog and website?) Finally, Matthew Flummer, Porterville College, guided us through a discussion of manipulation, while avoiding to do so.
There were more than 15 philosophy professors that I knew or met from Fresno City, Clovis Community, College of the Sequoias, CSU Stanislaus, Reedley College, UC Merced and CSU Bakersfield! The entire group of 30 or more made for a robust discussion. Jeff Yoshimi may have a more accurate count since he and David did a pizza run to provide potato, vegetarian and vegan pizza among the usual suspects - Merced has a great pizza place if you are in town. The UC Merced hosts included their philosophy stars (David, Carolyn, Jeff, Ben and many others.)
Already looking forward to next year's CVPA get-together, once again, hosted by Fresno City College. Fresno City College's, Wendell, Kerry, Wes and Michael who all joined us so that next year's get-together promises to be another winner!
Thanks again to Ben Pagler at UC Merced for development of an agenda, timely notices, wonderful venue and an overall great annual meeting!
