“What is the Illusion: The Self or Consciousness? A Conversation Across Analytic Philosophy and Advaita Vedanta”
Illusionism about the Self is the view that the self is, in some sense, an illusion. Illusionism about consciousness is the view that consciousness is, in some sense, an illusion. Buddhists, Advaitins, and cognitive neuroscientists, as well as analytic, phenomenological, and feminist philosophers have all entertained claims that either the self or consciousness (or both) are illusions. But what is an illusion? And which, if any, of these claims should we accept?
