Understanding eight qualities that distinguish students who are successful in college (and beyond) from those who struggle.

SESSION 2: STRATEGIES FOR INCREASING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Defining the characteristics of learner-centered education, exploring the evidence from educational neuroscience and classroom research, and experiencing learner-centered structures and strategies that lead to deep and lasting learning.

SESSION 3: STRATEGIES FOR INCREASING STUDENT EMPOWERMENT
Exploring non-cognitive strategies that empower students to thrive in a learner-centered environment, helping them reach more of their potential in higher education…and beyond.

SESSION 4: PROMOTING PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND SELF-MOTIVATION
Strategies for empowering students to take responsibility for being full partners in the quest for their education and discover their own intrinsic motivation for academic achievement, thus promoting greater perseverance when they encounter inevitable challenges in college or elsewhere in their lives.

                                                                          Conference Objectives

The 2-day workshop provides a foundation in learner-centered education and provides participants with practical and proven educational strategies they can implement immediately with their students. However, because of the additional time, the number of learner-centered strategies is more than doubled. At the end of the workshop, participants develop a specific plan to implement one or more strategies learned in the workshop. To extend their learning beyond the workshop, participants receive access to a web source of hundreds of innovative ways the workshop strategies have been employed by other educators across the curriculum.

Strategies for empowering students to make wise choices regarding their time, choosing purposeful and persistent actions necessary to stay on course to their goals and dreams.

SESSION 6: PROMOTING INTERDEPENDENCE AND SELF-AWARENESS
Strategies for empowering students to develop mutually supportive relationships necessary for achieving most of life’s lofty goals, including success in higher education, as well as developing an understanding of unconscious beliefs and habitual behaviors that sabotage their success.

SESSION 7: PROMOTING LIFE-LONG LEARNING
Strategies for empowering students to develop critical and creative thinking skills that lead to deep and lasting learning.

SESSION 8: ADDING TO YOUR LEARNER-CENTERED TOOLBOX
Participants each design a personal plan to implement one or more of the nearly 200 learner-centered strategies provided in the workshop, as well as learning about the extensive On Course resources for supporting their ongoing efforts after the workshop to improve student learning, academic success and retention.
