Hi CLUCK!

I'm new to chicken owning and raising, but I've always wanted to have a coop and a couple of birds.  About 4 weeks ago, I decided to take the plunge and build a coop, and since then, the project has occupied the vast majority of my weekends.  But, I'm almost finished, and I'd now like to get a few hens.  Does anyone have any recommendations on where to pick up some hens that are already (or close to) being able to lay eggs?  I've heard that you don't want to get them too old, because they'll fight for dominance if you put a couple of birds together that haven't grown up together.  I'd also rather buys hens than chicks, because it's already taken me a month to build this coop, and I'm getting impatient for eggs!

Any help would be appreciated, and let me know what you think of the coop!  -alan

I like your coop, too!

When I went to Eden Farms on 3/27, I got the last 5 18-week pullets.
They had plenty that are about 8 weeks now, though, as well as lots of
little chicks.

Craigslist sometimes has hens...

Good luck,
Nancy

Alan -
I think your coop looks great! I have a number of Speckled Sussex Pullets, out on pasture that were hatched on December 21 and are just about 16 weeks old. They should start to lay in June. You may buy as many or as few as you want.

The Speckled Sussex is a standard chicken bred as a layer as well as a meat chicken. Noted for their gentle nature, they are good foragers and lay light brown eggs. Their feathers are mahogany brown with black and white tips, which gives them the speckled appearance. They were bred in England in the 1830's and are equivalent to the American Barred Rock.

If you are interested please call (434) 589 3850 and I can give you directions to my place.

Susan - I would be interested in some of your chickens.  Do you still have some available?

Darla -
Yes, I have 31 16 week pullets left for sale. Call (434) 589-3850 or e-mail so we can make arrangements
for you to get some. I am asking $8.00 for each. The pullets are on pasture, lively, happy and will start to lay in June.

I live 1 mile from the Louisa/Ferncliff exit 143 off of Rte 64.
