Hello All,
As we head into the 2010 Season my excitement has been tempered by the sad the news that one of our Backers is in poor health. Our friend Tina (38) was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer and has had to move back to Upstate NY for family support and for financial reasons. I was contacted by Greg Hall who has been by Tina's side for 18 years and he informed me of their struggles. Many of you may remember Greg. He was the very excitable Backer who was very fond of shouting "We goin to the Super Bowl Baby" on each and every play. He is full of passion and it was obvious how much he has for Tina when I spoke with him this past weekend and offered whatever help the C.B.B.B. could provide.
In addition to Tina's health concerns, Greg shared that though he and Tina have been together for 18 years and have a beautiful daughter together, that they have not been able to get married since they have been unable to find Tina's ex-husband or to afford to take further legal action so that they could get married. Greg recently met a judge who is going to help them to get through this process so that they can get married after all but there is a cost associated with it.
Prior to learning their full story I had thought that we (the C.B.B.B.) might collect the proceeds from our weekly 50/50 raffle and donate it to Tina and Greg to help them relieve some of their financial burden. Now I think that perhaps we should shift our efforts and help Tina and Greg to live tout their joyful dream as opposed to preparing to wait out a potential inevitability. There is little that can be done about Tina's cancer but there is a lot we can do to help them Tina and Greg to live life to the fullest right now. So, this year the C.B.B.B. will be holding a weekly 50/50 raffle with all proceeds being donated as a wedding gift from us to them. In these tough times, I know it is a lot to ask but every little bit truly does help. If you are able to buy a raffle ticket or 2 each week, it will go a long way to bringing them joy and happiness in otherwise trying times.
When I spoke with Greg this past Saturday he thanked the C.B.B.B. and the Lazy Parrot for all of the good times he and Tina have had over the past couple of years and expressed how much they were going to miss Sundays with us. We will certainly miss them as well. I asked him to let me know how much I could share with the group. Greg's reply is below.
Hey patrick,
I will tell you all. Whatever you want to share is fine with us.
We have been together for 18 years. We moved to Virginia in september of 99 for a better life for us and our daughter Marissa who is now 12. I started out here making 6.25 an hour at a Wafflehouse in Richmond. Through the years we have had our ups and downs. We turned left when we should have turned right and sometimes took things for granted but we have always learned from our mistakes. Our final move, or so we thought, was to charlottesville. Then terror struck our family in a big way. The love of my life at 38 years old was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I love this woman with all my heart and i can't help her. I promised to protect her 18 years ago, and so for I haven't been able to keep that promise. This disease is slowly but surely eating us alive. I as a man and her as a woman, a human being and Marissa's mommy. What do I tell her? We are married at heart and always have been connected. We are true soul mates. This past year we finally got the money together to get her divorce done but now we can't find her ex-husband to deliver papers to. We now have to come up with a thousand dollars to get it done. This is our wish. We don't know from day to day whether she will even wake. Our fight is becoming short and not going well. All treatment is stopped. Our dream is tat if she has to go home to be with God then she should do it as my wife. So that is our fight and what we are praying. God bless you and the rest of the Charlottesville Bills Backers. There is no better chapter. We love y'all from the bottom of our hearts. We wish we could be there with y'all but our hearts are with you. I miss you all so very much and you can believe that WE ARE GOIN TO THE SUPERBOWL BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May god bless each and every one of you and please keep the prayers coming. We believe God will answer all of our prayers in his time.
Sincerely
Your brother and sister in the BILLS.
Greg, Tina and Marissa
