Hello all!

Please see the notes below, and find ways to get involved with school
garden grants (attend grant disbursement meeting - February 15th),
grow school gardens (sign up for a volunteer day), food systems
planning (contact Jen or Jackie at CVRPC), and start planning Growing
Local Fest (meeting - February 1st).

Thank you and have a great week!

CVFSC Committee Meeting – 1/19/12

Attending: Joseph Kiefer, Tom Sabo, Lyndon Virkler, Kim Hagen, Jen
Mojo (CVRPC), Jackie Cassino(CVRPC), Carl Etnier, and Hannah Snyder

School Grant Proposals (update) – GLF raised around $3,000

Which schools are w/o gardens?
Spaulding High School – get teachers involved to increase their
engagement (no land – working with Food Works at Two Rivers).
Harwood Union Elementary/Crossett Brook/Moretown could leverage work
together. Kristen Getler (Moretown) moved away and no longer works
there.

Contacts: Dave (Harwood – the new “Kristen”) and Don Maryanski (VYCC
program at the U-32 High School – need manual labor sites). Pool
labor sources (Ben &Jerry’s, National Life, Green Mountain Coffee
Roasters)

School grant proposals will be requested soon.
Kimberly Hagan – can the grant be used for labor for a food service
person?
- Rumney Memorial School hosts a fundraiser for a support person – to
clean and chop veggies (otherwise would need volunteers).
- Warren School gets a donation and parents come to help sort.
- Schools could have a marigold and bulbs sale for Mother’s Day (can
be run by students) & perennial sale.
- Paul Morris (Vermont Life article about him) – Food service director
at Harwood = increased quality of meals, farm to table, etc.
Karen Dyer – grow a row.

The key to school gardens is trying to make it part of the curriculum
and part of the school culture. East Montpelier school board is having
a guiding meeting ($4 million to bring the school up to spec) –
general meeting on Monday at 5:30pm (spaghetti dinner) 6:30 pm
(meeting).
The design meeting for school the following Saturday. Carl Etnier can
be contacted for more information on East Montpelier meetings
(ca...@etnier.net).
What should the school think about in regards to gardens? Facilities?
Integrate dairy in school’s work?

Growing Local Fest – Thoughts for the coming years –
On a Sunday?
Bucky Buckaw stop by and broadcast it?
Scope and vision for the event?
Which direction should it go?

Need to send RFPs out? Will send a copy to Tom.
- preference will be given to schools w/o gardens
- send to all schools

ACORN (Addison County) – worked w/FEED for a garden in every school
training (teachers, farmers, food service directors). Touch base with
Farm to School on trainings they have done. Co-leading workshops, peer
to peer, incorporate into the main curriculum (not just as visits).

Compile list for award letter.

Date for grant award meeting:
Grants due by February 10
Meet to decide on grants: Feb 15th at 5:00pm at Skinny Pancake (GLF
crew, Carl, Kimberly)
February 29th – e-mail notifications
Decision made by mid-March – announcement might not be the same month
(would like to invite press and general public)

Meeting for GLF discussion: February 1st at 5pm-7pm at NECI (Wine
Room)
Before next meeting – possibly a Sunday, potential collaborations,
vision and discussion on where we’re going with GLF. Raise some
planning money for the event and hire someone to plan it out (grant).
Buzz – have to be well organized in total. Joseph wants a binder
(printed stuff out) and add in NECI documentation.

CVRPC update from Jen and Jackie:
They serve focus on Washington Co, Williamstown, Orange, & Washington.
There is a food systems planning grant for the Central Vermont region
that runs through the end of October.
Over the summer and fall gathering baseline data for the region.
Important questions are - Where are we and where to go for this plan?
Demographic data/public health data/food distribution/community groups
throughout region -> host meetings for all the orgs
Goal: Baseline data created (working website), distributed via
website, and start the next round of grants to take the planning
further. With next round of funding the CVRPC will be able to provide
examples for local towns to integrate food systems.
They are currently looking for individuals that could refer
organizations to meet with and to contact.

Food security plans are a big piece of the puzzle.
Food plans also mean zoning (9 towns in Vermont don’t have zoning) –
building sites, soil tests, etc.

Hello All,

Attached is ACORN's strategic planning report, worth a read, as it contains some interesting stats pertinent to Washington County and is a good example of a comprehensive Food Systems study and plan.

Hi All,

I am wondering if there is a date for the next Steering Committee meeting? I am visiting some elementary schools in the Montpelier, U32 district this week to ask if they will be gardening this year and wondered if the garden grants have been determined yet. I am bringing along a list of local resources for grants and want to know if it is too late to bring along this grant opportunity if they are interested? Let me know.

Best,
Barbara
